I am born in Laval and I live in Québec City where Laval University is located, so I certainly know something about it
I simply didn't checked who was this guy because I'm not a sportsfan, and I took everything litteraly

A former Walmart location that has a "Now Open" banner?? Something must have been in there for a very short time after Walmart left. I wonder what it was?!?

The Now Open sign is the clincher! The transmission lines add a nice post apocalyptic feel. That and the parking lot is starting to look like the overgrown streets in I Am Legend. My guess is an old Sears from even before the bankruptcy. Those will blight the landscape for years to come.

Edit: did anyone else notice the second Now Open sign between the main entrance and the department store?

Second edit: the closer I look the weirder it gets. There’s a car parked inside the Honeydale Mall entrance. Just hanging out like it’s perfectly normal when there’s an entire parking lot that’s empty. There’s also what appears to be police tape in front of some of the shuttered store fronts. Is this from Canada or Detroit?

They've been trying to redevelop that mall into residential but it's been stuck in court for some reason. Seems like a no brainer.

Etobicoke. In the heart of Ford Nation.
Right nearby is the highly successful Sherway Gardens Mall.
But Honeydale Mall has never been a honey. Couldn't draw flies, but seems to attract garbage and police tape.
It is possibly the most apocalyptic place in Canada.

You're obsessed with this mall. It's a common story in Toronto. A developer bought it with plans to build 5000 units. They let it flounder for decades as the multiple leases expired. Apparently, there are still issues with land leases for the anchor buildings. The Now Open signs are common vestiges of these shutting down malls too as vacate spaces are temporary filled with seasonal or electronic clearance centres. (Like the Halloween store in Dundas Square that temporarily filled the just vacated Future Shop)

Maybe. to me it is the worst of the worst, and thus emblematic of retail decay.

I can't find any Rona that is close to a cemetary but there is Westlawn Cemetary which is right beside the Mayfield Common. The closest big store to that is JYSK or Winners. Mayfield Common used to be a traditional mall but was converted into a big box venue a long time ago. Must have been in the 80s or early 90s.

SW corner of Ellerslie and Parsons. not really 'in' the parking lot, but close enough for SSP I guess

IIRC an additional issue is that about half the site is designated as employment lands in the Official Plan. Not sure if this has been resolved but the developer would obviously prefer to convert this designation to mixed-use to allow for residential development on the entirety of the site.

Price Chopper next to the graveyard could be the cover to this movie:

I’m not a Pokemon zombie. Is that still a thing? I thought that fad died a year or so ago.

It's more emblematic of skyrocketing real estate values in Toronto. There are dozens of 1970s Honeydale Malls that never really reached their full investment potential but soldiered on nevertheless until the condo market came calling.

Most do get redeveloped quickly like Warden Woods Mall but others like Honeydale linger on slowly closing off section by section until it's completely shut down. Than they sit for years while weeds take over the parking lot to be eventually be torn down only to sit as a vacant lot for years more with the rusting sign post usually left as an ironic reminder. Only now is the former Finch West Mall property being developed as speculative rental apartments after 20 years.

The owner of Honeydale will cash in by sitting on this for the last decade. The proposals have only gotten larger since they first proposed their half dozen, 20 something towers. The shittier the location, the more condo buying investors seem to flock to it. Vaughan Centre and this 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 stretch Dundas are selling towers out in days.

It's suburban shithole. Something like this is way worse.
