A lot of people might think along those lines, but want to appear neutral, so remain mute, or over-flexible and non-commital.
New Zealand did it, blocking foreign purchases. Surely we can.
of course we need to ban foreign ownership. the new StatsCan data even supports this when you look at it.

when is the GreenDP going to increase the buyers tax to 30%? i remember something being mentioned about that. but we should do what New Zealand did; do it nationally. but you'd never see Trudeau do that because it might hurt someones feelings. and you'd never seen the GreenDP do that because they cant make decisions without decades of studies.

Looks like they are partnering with Aspac - high end but somewhat ordinary designs
(Coal Harbour Green, River Green (near Oval))

The other two directors listed for Champion Rainbow fill out the other half of the story.

They are Jeffrey Skinner and Gary Wong, both noted with a 1055 West Hastings address that is the head office of Aspac Developments Ltd. Both are Aspac executives with Skinner, a vice-president, development and projects, and Wong, a vice-president and director.

Of note here is that Aspac has been developing projects in B.C. since 1993, including a joint venture with Marathon Realty (the real estate arm of Canadian Pacific Railways) that transformed Coal Harbour with its Harbour Green luxury condos. More recently, it also built River Green in Richmond and Wesbrook at the University of B.C.

“The two are working together on that project. (Carnival) chose a local company with know-how here,” said Perry Allen, a real estate consultant involved in the deal. He declined to comment on the exact financial arrangement between the two companies.

Why would I walk across the Granville Bridge to take these shots? Why, who else would be crazy enough to wander Vancouver snapping shots of demolition sites on Christmas Eve.

What's the point of putting something like this up for just a couple of months?!

And are the strings of lights that run all up and down the street still working?

Installed by Lumiere Vancouver and they're already working on making in permanent regardless of the petition.

Fantastic! it is a really cute looking piece of a community lighting feature.

What does the base look like? is it cemented / secured in place? if not I hope such will be done when made permanent.

Thanks for the Howe St. pics.

Hadn't noticed it was already gone.

*********

Agreed that it makes little sense to built such a site-specific sign and them decommission it.
It's not like it can be moved to another location or city for another art exhibition.

Just a concrete block currently. Photo taken by the artist of the sign:

Thanks!

Yeah, if made permeant (which I hope) it will need a proper base. Maybe even a small flower bed around it?

Looks like a permanent base to me. Looks just like what they used for that sign at the library. And that thing has been there since the Olympics

Wow, if two concrete blocks sitting on the sidewalk count as a permanent mount than street beautification standards have really slumped off in Vancouver.

Seriously, those look like what are used to prop up construction zone signage on a highway work site.

I always took the ones used fort the library sign as part of the "artistic" intent, as in trying to make it look like an industrial piece. (I always always assumed that it was temporary).

The Stream Clock, or really any lamp post is how signs usually meet the street... Given that it iso a special sign a small garden could circle it or some decorative masonry work, you know as would be done in any city that is striving to be "world class."

Concrete blocks were more to do with the structure under that part of the sidewalk than anything it seems.

Quote:
Located in front of the famous Vancouver Public Library building, this art work by Ron Terada is symbolic of many of Vancouver’s historical and iconic neon light signs, such as Woodwards and BowMac. The steel support structure was designed to resemble many of the signs of the old Woodwards era while meeting modern code requirements. The galvanized steel structure is bolted down to concrete blocks; the membrane over the walkway did not have to be penetrated since we used the concrete as deadload to prevent the sign from blowing over. Care was taken to use enough concrete weight to prevent the sign from blowing over but not so much that we would overload the support slabs below the sign.

.. they poured permanent concrete bases for the illuminated Vancouver Public Library signs they installed last year.

Mind you the location of the Robson side one is odd (in line with a lamppost) -
so maybe that was a function of the underlying membrane and supports.

************

Here's the banner on the hoarding of 840 Howe (Robson Court) showing the renovated entry, as well as pics of the column bases under reconstruction (they are removing the concrete bases of the former steel sculptural design elements).

Pics by me tonight.

Existing (repainted beige from the original green)
There also used to be globe light fixtures on the pedestals on each side of the columns.

Mistake. The green pillars and accents made the building stand out. Now it just looks like every other boring 80's 90's office building that gets a sterile and bland lobby renovation. I don't understand.

Absolutely terrible defacement. This building's colonnade is one of Vancouver's best examples of postmodernism done well. Shame on the property owner.
