A big problem with colour in the Canadian prairies is the issue of colourfastness with the relatively constant exposure to sun's UV rays. I think that may have a lot to do with preferences for colouring things. Constant fog rolling in allows colours to stand out longer.

I don't see lime green in any of those colors.

Lime green in these neighborhoods of a world class city. San Francisco and cities like it are known for people thinking outside of the box.

^Honestly, no thanks. While I am no fan of our endless seas of pale beige vinyl sidings in our suburbs, these examples are garish, IMO.

It's sad to me that for a brief period sandstone was the material of choice in this city and there were many quarries producing it. But for some reason, in a treeless prairie, it was decided that crappy wood was to be the predominant exterior material until we found cheaper, crappier alternatives.

Brightly colored housing is common in many places all over the world, the difference is Calgarians aren't ready for colorful or something out of the ordinary.

It's a matter of opinion, of course, but while that looks fine in small doses, having it across a large city would not look great.

What is always forgotten is that there can be a middle ground. Just because people don't want the city to be entirely filled with houses looking like St. John's doesn't mean they wouldn't appreciate more colour than shiny grey vinyl siding.

The first example is a good one. It's colorful, but not over the top. As much as colour can be cool, I would hate to see Calgary have any group of buildings with the color of Cinque Terre. That's way over the top.

That last example of London is a good one. Nothing too crazy only a slash of color here and there.

I like having color too, but disagree that tons of color is needed. The colorful houses of St John's adds charm, but St John's is hardly what I'd call a tourist attraction. You see post cards of St John's and it has the colored houses, but it's the same 100 or so colored houses, but from different angles. Also St John's is devoid of sunlight, so the color is necessary to keep people from blowing their brains out.

And anyways tourist towns don’t usually make great places to live. Great places to visit, but not to live.
