I always like how gloomy Montreal feels when it snows. It may not sound it it but I mean that in a good way. Some of my favorite Montreal memories are of when it was snowing and it felt like the sun never really made it off the horizon.

I agree there's a neat ambiance the city gets in those conditions. In Montreal (and Ottawa) it also means it's generally a lot warmer when it's snowy and cloudy. The worst days for me at least were the bright and sunny winter ones that hover around -20.

Montreal is a real grit-your-teeth metropolis in those conditions, she just looms and glowers. Like you said, it's not as bad as it sounds.

In the -30 sunshine she's an alien planet.

I get exactly what you mean. One of my favorite things about being downtown when it's cold or during snowstorms, there's just that "big east coast city" vibe.

I can imagine the guy taking the Toronto photo above just standing there for a good ten or more minutes

Montreal looks great, that kind of ambience sounds pretty interesting.

I know it's gonna sound like I'm trolling, but how could anybody not think that Vancouver has the best skyline in Canada? Too many interesting features for anybody to compete with.

Vancouver certainly has the most interesting natural backdrop of any major city in Canada. That's something that, while subjective, is hard for me to dispute. There are other Canadian cities in dramatic settings - St. John's harbour and Quebec city's cliff overlooking the St. Lawrence being the next two for me - but having 1,400 meter high snowcapped mountains rise out of the sea a mere 5 km from downtown is pretty extraordinary for a city of Vancouver's size.

I guess the Vancouver skyline might not do it for people who value things like layering of buildings from different historical periods, or who have a fondness for commercial skyscrapers, which, at least until 1990 (or still to this day in places like Calgary) put more emphasis on standing out as landmarks, with daring designs, top-notch materials and the audacity to have huge amounts of space taken up by non-revenue generating crowns and spires. I'm one of those people.

IMO, Vancouver has a great natural background, but the actual skyline, the actual towers that make up the skyline, are too short and too few to compete with Toronto...

I agree, Toronto by far has the best skyline in Canada.

I would give Vancouver a solid second.

Calgary is third followed by Montreal. Edmonton is the one to watch over the next few years though.

I would give Metrotown the best suburban skyline award, especially with how it is perfectly perched on top of a a 200 meter hill.

When it comes to natural backdrop for sure Vancouver takes the cake. You have water, snow capped mountains and glass buildings. I don't think many could dispute that if you're only judging natural backdrop, its hard to beat Vancouver.

But when it comes to the sheer # of skyscrapers and buildings and the height that comes with them, then I would also say it would be very hard to dispute Toronto at the top of that list.

What makes the best skyline? It's in the eye of the beholder. Montreal has an awesome diversity skyline (old churches meets new towers), Calgary has a very futuristic skyline, Vancouver has the natural setting skyline wrapped up, and Toronto has the beast factor. Take your pick.
