That would've been nice; I liked Empire a lot better than I like Cineplex. :/

A friend of my brother who was one of the people who lost(or is loosing) his job with Sobeys. at least he had been there long enough, and had managed his money well so he, and others will be fine for now anyway. He has said that Sobeys attempts to expand may have been caused by an offer to purchase the entire company by a company who knows market trends, and can expand properly, and they would not have had to sell off Empire theaters, or any other Theaters they use to own.

Hop, Skip, Jump at Wheeler Park is finally opening on December 9th.

Renovations seemed to take forever to complete. I was almost ready to issue a post wondering what was going on when this announcement was made on their FB page.

Based on the conversation going on in the Dieppe thread about coffee shops, I was actually surprised when I moved to the Point Park area of Riverview, actually south of it, over a year ago that there is not a single drive through coffee shop on Hillsborough Road.... nothing east of the bridge all the way to Hillsborough.

Given the amount of traffic I see in the morning and in the evening, the growth of the subdivision south of Point Park, the ATC centre, the water treatment plant and basically the one road heading west to town, I thought there would have been one. Maybe someday.

I’ve often thought that was strange too. Only one gas station too and it’s pretty old. The area could definitely use a Tim’s, a subway, and probably a burger place, maybe like BK cause there isn’t one in riverview,

You're right Sunnybrae, I moved into Point Park from Lakeville a couple months ago and was hoping one day that Petro Canada opened up a Robin's Donuts. Its really busy and hard to get onto Hillsborough road from Emery..now I just go to Point Park road to get on, as there is already 2 lanes there. Hard to beat MacDonald's coffee deal though... I already have 6 cards filled out for free coffee's.

We're getting into the winter doldrums in terms of development news here on SSP.

It'll be relatively quiet for the next couple of months..........

The BellAliant store in the food court area in CF Champlain apparently reopens tomorrow.

There locations in front of the old Tommy's as well. They had emptied all the cases. That's if they re-open both location.

Acording to Staff at CF Champlain The Sears store will be replaced by a single tenant.

If that is the case anyone know of any companies who would take up (If I'm not mistaken) 130,000 Sq Ft of Comercial/retail space.

Wednesday I was thinking 2 tenants since Management where walking around talking, and it sounded like they where talking about the creation of a second loading dock area on the oposite side of the Sears store curent loading dock (The grass area, and small area where they had placed a "red box like" movie rental place).

If true, the only really logical replacement tenant would be HBC.

Simons might be a possibility, but Moncton would be a small market for them and the store might be a little large for them.

A single tenant for that much space?

Well WalMart is already there so they won't want it.
Canadian Tire is across the street and has numerous other stores in the area so scratch them.

Jysk maybe? Looking to get into a non-Ikea market? Or is that too much space for them?

Really I think the only retailer who would look for that much space (and isn't already in/near the mall) would be Hudsons Bay. The Bay is very likely and matches the signals we've seen hints at for years.

The other option would be one of the Quebec department stores, maybe Simons?

It won't be Canadian Tire or JYSK, that's 100% sure. These are not mall tenants.

If it's only 1 tenant, there are only very few options.

1. It will probably be Hudson's Bay and it would fit well into the mall. Even if the department store world is in crisis, some department stores and certain locations still do well and I believe a Hudson's Bay location would do quite well at Champlain.
2. Simons
3. Home Outfitters (HBC owned)
4. The new Cineplex Entertainment Complex (the Rec Room)
5. Saks Off 5th (Saks Fifth Avenue outlet location)
6. Nordstrom Rack (Nordstrom outlet location)

I would say the last 2 are very very unlikely, but decided to add the to the mix because they are somewhat expanding in Canada. Place Ste-Foy in Quebec City is what I consider a fashion mall and they got a Saks Off 5th this year, so that's why I thought it might be an option. As for Home Outfitters they are sometime in a mall setting (Fairview Pointe-Claire) but with the Linen Chest inside Champlain, I don't know. Also other than Hudson's Bay and the Rec Room, the Sears size is too large for these tenants I just mentionned, so this is somewhat puzzling. I'm not convinced that there will only be one tenant for this space.

In any event, major upgrade and renovation will be needed to the Sears location and the new store whatever it might be, and won't open until late 2018 or 2019, IMHO.

What if you divided the space up? Zara, Forever 21 & a Relocted Old Navy.

We will already be the only mall east of Ontario with H&M, Urban Planet, Victoria Secret, & Hot Topic; add Zara, Forever 21 & Old Navy and you’re golden!

True enough, but Scarface's premise is that there will be only a single tenant. I have no idea if his "source" is reliable or not, but proceeding with the single tenant thesis, HBC seems the likely candidate.

I have no doubt that CF has been working on a contingency plan for this space for at least a couple of years (since Sears ultimate demise became obvious). I have little doubt the space will be filled within 12-18 months, whether by a single tenant or several tenants.

My money is on HBC though.........

Time for some hot and heavy retail speculation........

Valley Ridge Furniture (out of Freddy) is currently undertaking a warehouse sale in the empty unit at the Hastings Ridge plaza on Mountain Road.

Hasting's Ridge is owned by Joel Barnaby.

I know for a fact that the Valley Ridge owners came down and had a look around Barnaby's Fine Furniture while they had their retirement close out sale.

Could it be that Valley Ridge is "kicking the tires" of setting up a retail store in greater Moncton?

Could they be thinking about taking over Barnaby's furniture store????

Enquiring minds want to know........

Sherbrooke is only slightly bigger than Moncton... If it is for one single retailer, my bet is on Simons. With HBC's current situation, I'm assuming an expansion to such a small market is not on their radar.

HBC (despite their current financial woes) might still consider a return to Moncton. Their previous store here was marginally profitable, despite being located in the dying and nearly vacant Highfield Square Shopping Centre. I think it's reasonable to predict they would do better at Champlain Place. I imagine CF would give them a good deal on the lease as well.

I understand your concerns though, and Simons would be an exciting alternative. It is an up and coming higher end fashion department store, currently undergoing a successful expansion across the country. Odds are that Simons will take the old Sears space at Halifax Shopping Centre. It might make sense for them to come to Champlain at the same time. Moncton is a small market for them, but the mitigating factor might be the large Acadian population here, which might be appealing for a Quebec based retailer.......

I don't think we will land a Simons before Halifax, then again perhaps we will end up with a Simons and the Halifax Shopping Centre will get a Nordstrom, but I'm not really sure if Halifax can sustain such a high-end retailer (Nordstrom), there is no question that Moncton can't. Because of our bilingual status Simons could be in the cards for us, I believe the brand is fairly well known in our region. In any event, I truly believe that one or both shopping centres will end up with a Simons. The next 2 years will be interesting for Champlain and HSC. What will they fill-up their Sears spaces with???

We posted at exactly the same time. Speculation on the Halifax retail threads is that Simons will replace Sears at HSC (although probably not occupying the whole space). Nordstroms would be fantastic, but is unlikely. They still haven't completed their rollout in the largest Canadian cities yet.

I agree that the wild card playing in our favour for a Simons in Moncton is our bilingualism.
