Get the 🞵🞵🞵🞵 out!

Oh no!!!

That was my watering hole for years in Van. Many birthday celebrations there.

I literally have a very personal connection to Gyoza King.

Not only does it feel like an authentic Japanese izakaya (classic styled interior, menu, and all Japanese staff) but that is where I first met my wife! She was working there on a one year holiday visa.

Ugh... a little more character gone... I am sure it will be replaced with a bland modern condo retail space..

My photo - Nov 22nd 2017

Sushinism at Broadway and Laurel is being replaced with One Noodle. The photo is a couple of days old, and the old signage has already been taken down.

Ahhh Daily Hive clickbait - thought the writer might've reached out to someone to confirm when it's closing, but nope, just spreading a rumour everyone already knew.

Bin4burger has opened up in the old Luke's Corner Kitchen space at Granville and W.15th. Looks like a local chain from Victoria.

Not even a rumour, there's been condo plans for that spot for years and the Ambleside location replacement has also been known for a long time.

What does the term 'Tin Palace' mean with the restaurant?

It used to be an Earl's premium brand that started back in the 80s.

Actually it was known as the first Earls. The "Tin Palace" refers to its shiny metal strip panels that covered that building and subsequent locations. You can still see a few remnants of this feature on the Broadway and Fir Earls at the top. Recent renos have taken most of the shiny panels away.

I stand by my comments. I was around when the first Tin Palaces appeared in Alberta, before the BC locations were set up.

Both of you are wrong. It was originally Earls Tin Palace.

Only half wrong - the Tin Palace still refers to the exterior cladding

The Globe & Mail's list of best 10 new restaurants came out. I can vouch for St.Lawrence having just been there a couple weeks ago. Great food, great space. Even here the cold dead hand of house prices makes it's mark:

Is the Vancouver restaurant bubble bursting? This was a slow year for new openings. Anecdotally, I hear of restaurants sharing staff, shortening shifts and reducing their hours. The labour shortage, especially for cooks, is getting desperate.

This year's Top 10 list of new restaurants is dominated by enterprises that are owned by multiunit groups rather than independents. But it also includes innovative concepts such as an all-day café and a chef-driven fast-food counter. Alongside the showy hotel restaurants, there is a mom-and-pop Michelin-style restaurant and eateries specializing in such underserved niches as seafood, regional Mexican and Québécois.

The independent chef-driven restaurant is by no means dead in Vancouver, but I do worry about its future. Long live the pop-up...

...Vancouver's best new restaurants
10. Hook Sea Bar
9. Heritage Asian Eatery
8. Mott 32
7. Vij's Rangoli
6. Oddfish
5. Mak N Ming
4. Botanist
3. Bows & Arrows
2. Fayuca
1. St. Lawrence..

And the food sucked. Quality control was lacking. They had a $2 double burger special on Tuesdays.. had it once, felt ripped off. Never went back.

Ron.
