Lets all hate Toronto and its citizens for something they have no control over. Good, great!

It's almost as if Toronto is a bigger market than Winnipeg or something. I'm not sure what you're expecting here.

Weird overtime between Jets and Avs. Mackinnon scores two overtime goals in the same game.

Nice to see Montreal beat Ottawa last night.

And CBC has nothing to do with it anymore, they just eat up the scraps Rogers leaves them. The point is it's ignorant to pander to just Toronto all the time, there are more people in Western Canada than Toronto, but the Toronto centric media are all too eager to fellatiate Toronto every chance they get and it's quite often at our expense.
You're the one who's being ignorant. It's a business relying heavily on local advertising revenues. What matters more is the population density than a few hundred thousand more viewers spread over 100,000s of square kilometres. Most affiliates out west lose money with broadcasting local content. They only exist because the CRTC demands it to be approved a station in Toronto. Now, tell me you would do the same for your business.

Damn the Devils are really going for it. Vatanen is a legit defensive piece.

Hell of a turnaround in one year.

The grumblings about Canadian media focusing on Toronto come up elsewhere as well. I'm not sure if ultimately the point of people being annoyed is because they don't understand why it happens. Just because there are economic/market reasons doesn't make it less irritating though.

I totally get that it makes sense for stuff to be Toronto focused. It doesn't make me any more interested when Toronto issues are considered national news by default. A reasonable reaction would be "yeah, I get why that is annoying for everyone else but its probably not going to change anytime soon." Instead it becomes "omg you idiots - obviously people only care about Toronto anyways".

Oilers play the Leafs tonight, 7pm MST start time

The only Oiler home game I can think of this year that started at 5pm MST was against the Penguins

I don't see the issue, early start or not

No one is hating on Toronto, my gripe is purely with Rogers. Leaf fans are usually good fun, though I barely recognize them without their paper bags this year... lol

Lol, this business is making massive profits, the one or two games a year out west aren't going to bankrupt Rogers dude, not even close!

So the Leafs are such a massive draw, but all their fans can't stay up late on a saturday night to watch their precious team? don't be ridiculous, if they are so popular and have a massive fan base spread across the country, then the loss in revenue for the first game should be easily made up in the second game.

My comments about the industry aren't specific to the Leafs. They could be dated as well. It's been many years since I stopped dating a senior executive at a broadcast media company. They still apply though. Why wouldn't you try to maximize your revenues in favouring the larger markets? They did spend a fortune for the licensing.

I'm sure you'll find this equally ridiculous. It's a lesser inconvenience for just about everyone else to watch a game by themselves or with family and friends starting at 4PM than a game starting at 10PM. It's why national live broadcasts of American sports still heavily favour the East Coast with 8:15 EST starts over the usual 7 to 7:30 EST starts.

I completely understand the reason why they do this, you don't need to keep trying to explain it. I just think it's bullshit and is very disrespectful to the West.

Anyway, back to actual hockey talk. Arizona are in town tonight, Flames should play well against them and I expect Smith to put on a clinic in net!

Derek Dorsett looks to be done for the season, and I think his future is very much up in the air now. Tough loss for the Canucks, the guy is a tool most of the time but does contribute, think he's just below .5ppg so far this year.

Cam Talbot is on IR now too, Edmonton should quickly spiral down now, don't think Brossoit will be what they expected him to be, especially with the bad morale aroung the locker room there.

Big trade between Anaheim and NJ, think both teams came out of this well!

I'm sure you will do well against the Coyotes tonight unlike the leafs last week who didn't give them the respect they deserved.

Do Westerners watch twice as much hockey as those from the East? 10pm Eastern means change the channel or turn the tv off and go to bed? Id watch a game between Florida and Montreal at 4 and then say Winnipeg in Phoenix at 7 no problem.
Are Leaf fans also hockey fans or do they just watch their own team play? I know the Marlies draw a relatively small crowd despide the huge population.
