All jaws were on deck on that decision.

Maas seals victory for Stamps, was looking like a great finish until then, could have been an OT finish. Well something for Edmonton fans to rue for the next year, much like Stamps fans have rued Dickson not giving the ball to Messam in last years Grey Cup. Parker must be the happiest guy on the Stamps seeing his dropped pass didn't factor in the game.

I've not seen many play-calls that could not be rationalized in any way whatsoever. They handed Calgary the game. Even if they'd gotten the ball back they would have stood little chance of scoring a TD to win.

He must have thought it was only a 6 point lead. There is no other explanation.

Definitely a weird call by Maas, but it is what it is. To say that Edmonton handed them the game or Edmonton would have won based on a different decision means you might as well give last year's grey cup to the Stamps. Nobody ever knows how a play is going to turn out. Also people should remember that there are play calls all game long that affect the result of the game. People only remember the ones late in a game.

Bottom line is that the Stamps were the better of the two teams, and outside of two quick touchdowns against a rusty defense, the Stamps defense came up big when it counted. Edmonton had the rest of the game to score points, and only managed 13 points during that time. That's where they lost the game.

Terrific east final. Great atmosphere in the stands from start to finish. I can't remember the last time an Argos game felt like that. They won more than a few new fans tonight. Sask out. Too bad melon heads.

I'm not sure how it played out on tv but in person it didn't feel like 50 minutes of dud. Argo offense was awful in the first half but the defense were fabulous and entertaining. I suppose that doesn't excite some fans but the crowd was very much into it.

So who thinks the Argos have a shot against Calgary? The Argos are a good team and surprises can happen, but let's face it... Calgary is a great team. I'd be surprised if the Stamps weren't double-digit favourites for Grey Cup Sunday.*

* I thought the Riders would beat Toronto today, so take that for what it's worth

After last year's loss to the Red Blacks you never know, on the other hand last year's loss is probably still on their minds and may help them from getting off to a slow start like last year.

I agree the Stamps are a better team on paper, but in one game anything can happen.

It all comes down to Ricky Ray, as simple as that. As I said before I almost hope the Argos lose as ironically I think it will be better for the future of the team.

That's a good way to put it. I've seen plenty of Edmonton fans on line claiming they would've won the game if not for the bad decision. Well, another way to look at it is, hey the Stamps spotted you two easy touchdowns to start the game and you didn't take advantage of it the rest of the game.

No doubt he has to perform but as was clearly evident, the Argonaut defense can make a big difference in the outcome. Going into the 4th quarter Saskatchewan had only 3 points.

I’d give a slight edge to Calgary.

Much Ado About Nothing or Am I Missing Something Here

Messam calls out the CFL on TSN panel for doubting him

After racking up 115 all-purpose yards and a TD against the Esks in the West Final, Stamps RB Jerome Messam voices his frustration at the CFL on TSN panel for doubting him.

- Dunigan doesn't say anything bad about him and Messam doesn't seem to be talking about the panel, at least that's how I interpret it.

Final quarter of Argos' last-minute win over Roughriders was the CFL at its delirious best
Canadian football can make you crazy. It can make you cringe. It can pull at your heart or stun you in wonderment
Steve Simmons The National Post November 19, 2017

TORONTO — This is what the CFL can still do.

It can make you crazy. It can make you cringe. It can make you freeze your butt off and wonder what you’re doing sitting outside on a frigid, windy afternoon.

It can pull at your heart or make you rise in celebration, just like that.

Or it can grab you and hold you, stunned in wonderment, like the best of novels always do.

And it did all that in the fateful frantic frenzied final seconds of an Eastern Division championship game that was won, then lost, then won again, barely by the shocking Toronto Argonauts, a team that was good on defence until they weren’t, lousy on offence until they weren’t, occasionally undisciplined, and sometimes inept and, in the words of coach Marc Trestman, “we didn’t do much offensively until the last drive of the game. We did enough to win.”

This has been an impossible season of sorts for the Argos, and impossible story starting with the hiring of Trestman and Jim Popp on the final day of February, with no coaching staff in March, with almost no receivers to bring forward, with no defensive backs of consequence too call their own — they started three months after the rest of the CFL got started.

And here they are, heading to the Grey Cup after a 25-21 win over Saskatchewan, which is nothing new for Trestman and Popp, who have done this together three previous times.

This was the ebb and flow of Canadian football at its best and worst and coldest. The Argos led 17-3 at the half, 18-3 at the end of three quarters and hail was falling from the Toronto skies. The game was in the bag.

This is how bad the Roughriders were on offence — or how great the Argos were on defence. In the first half, the Riders finished the first half by throwing an interception to Cassius Vaughn, which came after an interception by Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, which came after an interception for a touchdown by Terrance Plummer, which came after Saskatchewan and Toronto punted nine times in the first half, 19 in the game. The game was in the bag.

Then the bag broke. The Riders looked to be heading to Ottawa for the Grey Cup when the local kid, quarterback, Brandon Bridge, became the first Canadian to throw a touchdown pass in a division title game since Russ Jackson threw on in 1969.

That pass to the entertainer Duron Carter came after he had made a 36-yard run himself and the Canadian was about to be the story of the day.

The Riders were coming back.

The Canadian quarterback was about to become the theme of Grey Cup Week.

And right after that, Christion Jones ran a punt back for a touchdown and the Riders had come from trailing 18-3 and were ahead 21-18. Everything seemed to be going green.

And then Ricky Ray, not having a great day, not working the wind in his favour, getting hammered more often than he would like, started being vintage Ricky Ray.

Bam! A completion. Bam! Another one. And all of a sudden, it’s third down and five yards to go and he makes one of those impossible Ray throws to James Wilder Jr.

A few plays later, it’s Colin Kaepernick’s old backup, Cody Fajardo, on the quarterback sneak and the Argos were going to the Grey Cup.

The Riders were outscoring the Argos 18-0 in the fourth quarter before Fajardo’s score, but a Saskatchewan defender “took a peek” in the words of coach Chris Jones and with Ricky Ray “he’s going to stick the ball in on you.”

Saskatchewan winning would have been almost as unlikely as the Argos winning. That was the charm of this crossover matchup.

“Nobody gave us a chance (this season),” said Jones. “They were ready to run our coaching staff out of town and we’ve got a great group of guys, a great coaching staff.”

One great group of guys is going to the Grey Cup.

One great group of guys is flying home and wondering why.

“You never lose on one mistake,” said Jones. “We took too many penalties. We were the more undisciplined team today, which cost us four or five times.”

Trestman said almost the identical thing about his team.

Jones walked around his locker room after the defeat and stopped at every player’s locker. He had a word to say, a handshake, not to undo the pain, but to make it a little more palatable.

Trestman called his offence “anemic.” He told them at halftime their defence was carrying them.

“We really had only one of two plays in the first half that was productive,” he said. And they weren’t any better in the second half, until desperation hit on the final drive. The Argos went ahead with 20 seconds to go.

And the crowd seemed alive at BMO Field for the very first time, even when the football didn’t necessarily match the feeling. The final minutes were breathtaking. It was the CFL’s version of 3-on-3, fun and delirious, wild and furious. This is what Canadian football can still do after all these years.

The games don’t have to be great if the endings are.

They wouldn't have assuredly won the game but that decision left them with almost no chance of winning the game.

Had they gone for it on 3rd and 4 they would have either got a first down, scored a TD, or turned the ball over on downs to the Stamps who would have been deep in their own zone.

If Edmonton's defence could have held them to two plays and a punt, then Edmonton gets the ball back probably at least at midfield with about a minute to go.

So while this is not an exact science, their best chance at winning was to go for it IMO.

Maas had a giant brain cramp, plain and simple. There is no way he could rationalize his decision. Best thing that he could do is fess up, apologize to his players and Edmonton fans, and attempt to move on. Personally I wouldn't judge the guy on one late-game screw up. (Now, if he ever did something like that again...)

I guess he has a very dominant personality as well, to the point where I guess no one on the bench (players or assistants), dared to ask "are you really sure about this, coach?"

Should be a good game for the Grey Cup. Calgary has the edge, but Toronto seems to have the energy.

No joke, this is the kind of mentality that has been identified as a cause of major plane crashes... where the captain is making a huge mistake that ends up killing everyone but the underlings simply don't dare challenge the boss.

Maas has the makings of a good coach but I think he needs to chill the eff out a bit. Compare rage-a-holics like him or Austin with cool, level headed guys like Trestman. Or when was the last time you saw someone like Wally Buono openly berating someone on the sidelines?
