There certainly is an argument for removing Wellington the third, but Commissioner is the primary access route for the parking below the National Archives. Now if you think that parking lot should be removed, that is another story.

Like Merivale Road, which is often extremely slow going.

With LRT on the horizon, Ottawa city staff propose realigning Slater Street

Roadway redesign comes as city prepares to decommission Transitway

The city has settled on a preliminary road realignment plan that would see the western intersection between Albert and Slater streets simplified as the city moves towards decommissioning the Transitway with the opening of the LRT.

A memo sent to members of council by transportation boss John Manconi provided an update on the design study of Albert Street and Slater Street.

The preliminary design would see the westernmost end of Slater street moved north, while Bronson Avenue would be widened to include four lanes.

The plan still needs the sign-off of the NCC, since the proposed alignment of Slater Street cuts through a chunk of federal land. Manconi said in the memo, however, that preliminary discussions with the NCC suggest that they are supportive of the design.

“This concept improves the road grid network and simplifies intersection operations, while also providing more land for infill development,” wrote Manconi. "As it exists now, a number of the intersections in the area include three streets, often with unorthodox angles."

The public will have a chance to weigh in on the design, as well as see the other options considered, at a public meeting later this fall. A full proposal is expected to be tabled next year, with construction planned to begin in 2019.

Its not one thing it does, its all of it combined that makes it valuable. Granted, I'm throwing in the doomed kettle island bridge with the doomed grade separated leitrim, but this makes sense and I would argue this curtails sprawl, not encourages it.
I think that would are correct, I have the same view... the anti sprawl people will surely hate this but...
I would extend the Leitrim/Fallowfield route west to join up to Hw7, doesn't need to be grade separated (initially). Also, the alignment near Ottawa airport would need to shift a little east and eventually line up to Albion. The Ottawa Airport has rights over a lot of the land further around the airport

Aside from NIMBY's, you would also face a huge challenge from the NCC to build a HWY through the Greenbelt

Didn't know Commissioner served as access to those parking lots.

But yes, I think we should eliminate the stumpy Wellington that connects Albert to the main Parliamentary Wellington and name the new street built over the O-Train, behind the new Central Library, either after Pimisi Station or Thomas Ahearn.

Street sweepers fill up and tour buses lay up on Commissioner (or whatever it is there) at the bottom of the Escarpment facing Pooley's bridge and the Pumping Station, too.

At this point, I'm only proposing to eliminate Wellington, not Commissioner. They run parallel a few meters from one another, so I don't think we need both.

Whatever they do, they should at least change the name of that Wellington. It's just confusing.

The stupid BrownBelt is already cut up with highways, other roads, utility corridors, and rail lines; what's one more?

Pave the damn BrownBelt.

Did you guys come here from the 70s?
This road can only be built after 417 is demolished and this is not happening any time soon unfortunately.

Aren't there some possibilities to put Commissioners St. and the Wellington rump street to good use? They're there, they have rights of way... why not find something better for them "to do"?

Albert Street and Slater Street Corridors (Empress to Waller) Functional Design Study
https://ottawa.ca/en/city-hall/public-en...s-empress-waller-functional-design-study

Tuesday, November 28, 2017
City Hall, 110 Laurier Avenue West
Council Chambers and Jean Pigott Place
5:30 to 8:30 p.m., presentation at 6:30 p.m.

You are invited to attend a public open house for both the Albert Street and Slater Street Corridors (Empress to Waller) Functional Design Study and the Slater Street and Bronson Avenue Environmental Assessment Study.

The City of Ottawa is studying Albert Street, Slater Street and the Mackenzie-King Bridge between Empress Avenue and Waller Street. The study will explore opportunities to improve walking, cycling, transit and general traffic along these streets by reallocating existing Transitway lanes after the O-Train Confederation Line opens in 2018.

Albert Slater Study Area Map2
The study findings will provide design input into the City’s:

Planned integrated road reconstruction on Albert and Slater Streets between Empress Avenue and Bay Street and Bronson Avenue between Queen Street and Laurier Avenue, and for
Interim roadway modifications to Albert and Slater streets between Bay and Waller streets, including the Mackenzie King Bridge, to be implemented following decommissioning of the bus Transitway in the downtown when the O-Train Confederation Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line comes into service in 2018.

Just like how it took google quite a while to show the new section of A70 at Saguenay, QC...

Kanata South Link

Hey all,

I am wondering if anyone has heard more information about the widening of Hunt Club from the 416 to Old Richmond and the widening of Old Richmond to Hope Side Road.

Seems like The City of Ottawa's webpage hasn't updated anything since 2015 and the timeline posted there says construction between 2018-2021.

Thanks in advance!

In the 2017 Capital Budget, City Council approved funding for the Kanata South Link
Project involving the widening of Hope Side Road, Old Richmond Road and West Hunt
Club Road from Eagleson Road to Highway 416. The project is required to minimize the
impact on the Greenbelt lands and to protect the Stony Swamp Conservation Area and
wetlands. The functional design consists of a rural road cross-section with paved
shoulders within the Greenbelt and an urban cross-section for 500 metres on the west
side of Old Richmond Road and along the north side of Hope Side Road. Two lane
roundabouts are included at all intersections except at Moodie Drive, where signals are
specified to reduce impacts on adjacent wetland.

Following the completion of the Preliminary Design and updated cost estimates, the
project scope was prioritized and work is proceeding to obtain both Federal and
Provincial approvals. Detailed design is underway, following which the project tendering
process will be initiated, with contract award scheduled for summer 2018.

The City must acquire fee simple interests in property from the National Capital
Commission and two private property owners to support the widening of the roads. In
order to meet construction timelines, the City requires the ability to acquire property
interests by expropriation, if necessary.

The purpose of this report is to seek Council approval for the initiation of expropriation
proceedings with respect to certain property interests required in connection with the
Kanata South Link Project as more particularly described in the draft by-law attached
hereto as Document 1.

Yeah, the way it is worded makes no sense. The road isn't required to protect the greenbelt, it is "required" because of suburban growth. But the reason is being implemented as widenings of existing roads (as opposed to an entirely new road as it was originally envisioned) is to minimize the impact to the greenbelt.
