Tearing it down for what?

This is why I’m against very tall buildings in the West Loop. It makes this kind of shit too tempting.

Chicago already completely destroyed River North decades ago, and now seems incapable of preventing the same mistake.

It is quickly becoming a city with way too much glass and concrete and not nearly enough brick. The latter is warmer, more inviting, catches the sun in late afternoon, etc. Scroll a few posts up to Solarwind’s photos of the Aloft development... that whole view looks dead and corporate. It has no soul.

I disagree. We’ve had a parking shortage in the West Loop for years. Somebody needs to do something. I’m hoping we get a parking lot out of this. Brick is ugly and old, attracts a lot of rats

I'm not sure there are many cities that boast more about it's architectural history but could give a shit less about preserving it than Chicago. There's maybe a dozen or so buildings they'd save and scrap all others to make room for another corporate restaurant or cell phone superstore.

FYI... heard a rumor about a potential high rise in the Wesl Loop. I want to say Lake and Morgan was the intersection, but I may have that slightly off.

About 34 floors and Sterling Bay was the developer.

For those who scower the city clerk website. Keep an eye out.

Completely Agree! About 4 years ago I bought a classic Italianate in East Lakeview that had great bones but needed a ton of work. I needed a variance for some of the work, and when I went to Tunney's office he said "why don't you just knock it down and start over"...The freakin' Alderman said that, about a beautiful Italianate!

It really is sad how few shits this city gives about it's architecture.

About 2 years ago, I attempted to buy a great Greystone on THIS lot, it had great detailing and would have been a great project; for various reasons the seller took another offer, from a big developer, who razed the building immediately. I know this is small potatoes, but it's death by a thousand cuts going on!

No kidding.

Daniel Burnham is probably legitimately one of the 20 or so most famous Chicagoans globally, and not even one of his buildings is safe.

I'm assuming you realize many of Burnham's buildings are landmarked, yes? I get what you're trying to say, but the phrasing is a little awkward.

This isn't a bad building, but it's not exceptional and has no important historic events attached to it. Plenty of US cities have old industrial buildings just like this. Burnham's buildings don't constitute a body of unique, irreplaceable work like Sullivan or Wright. His significance mainly concerns city planning and the refinements his firm made to skyscraper design (Reliance Building, etc).
