So is there the possibility that after Amazon has sifted through the 250-odd applications and presentations, that they will not just select one city, but come up with a short list? Then those cities have to come back with even better offers?

Not only is there a possibility, that is their stated plan. They've already said the plan is a short list by the end of the year, with a final selection some time next year.

the short list, yes, but do cities have to / get to sweeten their offers, or is their initial offer their first, last, and best? Or is it that if you're on the short list, you can make some clarifications etc., but not sweeten?

Those are good questions and I don't know. I would imagine, though, that it would be up to each city to decide how they choose to respond to having made it to a short list.

I would assume that plus tours, presentations, etc. And deeeeeep vetting of the top few proposed districts to see if there are hidden uncertainties related to ability to build what they want.

Obviously you wouldn't make a decision like this without thousands of hours of analysis and a sizable process to establish local relationships.

Anyone know when Chicago will release there promo video to amazon?..I know a handful of other cities already released theirs..just curious to see Chicago's.

I know i'm biased but Chicago really is the perfect fit for Amazon compared to many of the cities that we know are really in the Top 10 when it comes down to it (Atlanta, Dallas, NYC , Boston, Philly,Austin,DC, Denver).. Chicago is the only city that gives affordability (relative to the cities listed above) the arts and culture and city energy that are only rivaled by NYC, a huge student population, a respected business city on a global scale (only see NYC and Boston comparable), and most important Chicago has presented some of the best possible proposals for headquarter locations compared to any of the cities listed. The city really went all out with giving such a variety of options and the developers came up with amazing proposals , you can only give Chicago props for really doing its homework and going after Amazon aggressively.

Chicago's definitely a top contender IMO.

WSJ just released their own rankings on who will win based on their RFP analysis. They ranked Dallas at #1, Boston at #2, and DC at #3.

Sorry, paywall in effect: http://www.wsj.com/graphics/amazon-headquarters/

Big caveat, the WSJ study didn't look at Canadian bids.

Somewhere, Jeff Bezos is laughing at how wrong they got it.

Atlanta was tied for #3 with DC.

Going down the list, Chicago, Nashville and Minneapolis also made the top 10 (#4, #6 and #9 respectively)

Another big caveat, the don't consider public transport. That seems to be a major consideration for Amazon.

Yup, which is why I'm not taking this all that seriously. Public transit was an emphasis point in the RFP, a big one at that. Makes me wonder if WSJ didn't conduct their analysis with full News Corp-colored glasses on.

Yeah. They placed emphasis on state income taxes (which Amazon didn't) and excluded public transit (which Amazon emphasized)!

Clickbait on WSJ's part.

Dallas has transit. I would argue that it has a more extensive network than Seattle, which I would see as a benchmark since it seems to be working for them now.
