That was exactly my experience working at Comcast, when I just moved to Philly. Luckily, I found a more interesting and exciting job after 4 months working for them.

I am planning to buy a house next year, but with the current trends of demand and supply, I may not be able to buy anything in a decent condition in the neighborhoods that I prefer.

I live near this place; the Library is on the corner. This is a nice design; a really nice design.

I do have one concern about the design however. 40th and Walnut Street is very congested; in some ways its more congested then 15th and Market because even though 15th and Market have far more traffic; people don't stop and double park as much on Market Street. Also parking is a premium in this location. Parking should be provided for the students who will be residents but not at the expense of destroying the design or the sidewalk urban feel.

If my proposal would count for anything I would had a 9 story garage to the Walnut Street Tower but hidden from the street in some way. If the students have cars and they're living there then when they come in at night they'll parking 3 blocks away.

Very few Penn student's have a car on campus, and the ones that do mostly don't live in the dorms. I would expect the parking impact to be minimal, if any at all. There's really no reason to have a car as a student here anyway. This location is 3 blocks away from the 40th Street MFL, and the trolley portal.

Indeed:

There are a lot of people who are Post Grads however so it could be some who moved in; I know some are professors as well but I assumed some were students to.

PENN parking

Penn claims that it has excess parking available in it's garages, such as the one just past 40th and Walnut. I wonder what the monthly charge is for a student.
Traffic —, and I wish all of you would take SEPTA so that my drive would go faster!!!

If traffic — around the Penn campus, it's because 40K people work at the University and Hospital Complex alone.

It's not because of the students, undergraduate OR graduate.

I've probably known 100+ graduate students at Penn in disciplines ranging from Architecture to Medicine to Law to Biochemistry. I don't think I recall a single one of them having a car in Philadelphia. Not one.

I've known 100's students as well. Exceedingly few of them have had cars.

Also, I actually think traffic isn't that bad around Penn's campus, and I drive through / around it pretty much every week day. 40th & Walnut is not terribly congested, and street parking there is fairly easy as well. When I take my kids to a movie at the Cinemark, for example, I've always been able to park no further than half a block away.

I was a grad student at Penn in a multi-year program and I had a car there for maybe 3-4 months total. I didn't really pay much attention to this, but my recollection is that the few people who had cars were all renting apartments in expensive buildings which gave them parking spots anyway. Oddly enough, if anything my impression was that Drexel students are/were much more likely to have cars than Penn students. I'd be interested to see statistics on Drexel and how they compare tbh.

I don't know about statistics, but if I make it into Drexel I'm going to keep my IS 300 at all costs

Probably b/c Drexel is more of a regional school that draws a lot of students from the Philadelphia area. Some with cars are probably commuters and living at home. Others keep their cars to travel back and forth home. Penn students are coming from much further away and wouldn't use a car to drive home.

I'll also add that, unlike Temple, seems like the University City train station is not well utilized. It's not very well connected to either Drexel or Penn's campus. And I don't think every train stops there, unlike Temple. 30th Street Station is also a bit isolated from both campuses. If the University City station was located around 34th and Chestnut, that would serve both schools much, much better.

^ 34th and Chestnut is the site of my Law School. It is well removed from the Regional Rail lines, so there's no way to put a station there. There's an M-F line stop at 34th and Market, and a Subway-Surface stop at 36th and Sansom (and a couple on either side that serve Penn and Drexel respectively). U. City station was about the best they could do. It opened just as I was graduating, and it is more proximate to the opposite corner of campus from where I was, so I never really gave it much of a try (it is only served by the Media/Elwyn, Wilmington and Airport lines). The way to get to Penn or Drexel via rail is to get off at 30th Street and hop on the Subway-Surface lines ("anything but the 10 will get you to Penn"). That was my routine for three years.

It seems like UC mostly serves people who work at Penn hospital and CHOP. Trains from Elwyn, NEC south, West Trenton, Warminster, and occasionally Norristown stop at UC (along with Airport but for commuting purposes it doesn't matter).

Contrary to popular belief most of the cars parked around Temple don't belong to resident students but to commuters who don't want to pay for a parking pass. Many of the people I knew with cars on campus actually paid to keep in the Liacouras Garage.

one less crane

over the week end the mystery tower crane that had been parked on top of the new Children's Hospital Clinical Care building was taken down. Did anybody ever figure out what its use was for, so soon after the building was finished? (yes I know, it was used for lifting things)

Maybe it's changed since my friends all graduated (~2012), but back then everyone with cars was parking on the street. No one I knew there parked in the garage.

The revolution continues in Philly that is in the life sciences at Philly Universities . Philly is becoming known world wide for its innovation and discovery in the life sciences . I don't know if this article was posted on this forum but I apologize if it was for the redundancy .
