What's the purpose of the lines in those two distinctive-looking intersections?
They allow pedestrians to cross the intersection diagonally while the lights are red in every direction for cars. I don't know at what time of the day that picture was taken, but the streets are surprisingly empty.

They're pedestrian scrambles, where pedestrian have an exclusive interval to cross the street (traffic lights are red in all directions for about 20 - 30 seconds during each cycle)

There are more and more of those all over downtown, including on Ste-Catherine street.

They have scramble intersections in Toronto also: Yonge/Dundas and Yonge/Bloor.
