To me this is different than with a lucrative for profit group like CSEC. This was a non profit Arts group looking to fill a niche that this city is badly missing. The fact the city was playing hardball with them expecting them to raise 90% of the cost right away is just sad. Now instead we'll get a generic "Arts Space".

In any case I'm just glad the building won't sit abandoned indefinitely.

Was wondering what was happening with the Planetarium after Contemporary Calgary walked away. Glad it's going to be an art hub still.

I don't believe it was right away, rather I think the city bureaucracy offered three years for them to get to that level, else it was seen as too much of a risk IE a major city asset signed away with zero guarantee that the arts group could make it work. It was a mechanism to ensure the arts group didn't let the building fall into disrepair and just sit on it for decades to come.

Irrespective, happy the city is taking charge and upgrading this building.

Does anyone have the drawings to know how they will be redoing the entry? That is a major challenge now.

My personal thoughts are to cover the external stairs on the east side close to 7th ave (with contrasting colours like the other red and blue bits) and convert the emergency exit there on the main level to the entry. Handicap access could still be from the ground level, but on an as needed basis instead of the primary way in.

I also hope they rethink how the bathrooms are that were added inside, which completely intrude into the centre gallery-type area.

Soil samples being taken today at the New Urban site. This could be very good news.

This question was missed in the last thread so trying again here:

Does anyone know the status of a planned development at the Sam Livingston Building, 510 12th Avenue SW?

Looks like the building has been vacated now. There are also placards out front notifying that an application for a ~400 unit condo has been made. Just curious who the developer is and the likely timing of anything happening on the site.

I feel for the people who were about to start jobs there. Given how long it took to nearly open what are the odds they can rebuild and be open by next summer?

Yes I saw that leaving Save On last night. I've only waited 6 years for it to open. What's another year?
