In Darwin's latest post, he claims that the Booth Street cycle track fix won't happen until April (2018), which is fine because the Lebreton station isn't scheduled to open until August.

Does he know something we don't? This is the first I've heard the August date.

Originally planned for construction in fall, 2017 (ie, now) they have been pushed off to next April (2018) since the Station won’t be opening until August.

An official announcement is supposed to come at the end of the year. They might be in the process of deciding timing now.

Looking at the line, the eastern part of the line is basically done; pictures from the tunnel suggest it's pretty done too, but they do seem to be lagging behind west of the portal. I was expecting a two-pronged opening, where the line from Blair to Lyon would open in April, and from Lyon to Tunney's in December. But if Pimisi is going to be open in August they might just go whole hog and open the whole line then.

It'd still line up with my prediction where will sit there looking at it for a while unused, but an August opening would give lots of time for election season "look at me"

I take the bus past the western stations every day. Bayview and Pimisi are pretty advanced. I don't think they're that far behind. Tunney's Pasture on the other hand is lagging behind but they still seem to be working pretty quickly.

My weekly excursions to various under-construction sites give a good "time lapse" of what's going on. Things are happening a lot faster than most people realize.

I feel like Parliament Station is the one that's lagging behind the most. It's still an open cut. I think an early August opening is pretty realistic; before the Federal Election and during a quieter part of the year ridership wise.

It's City property. I'd like the City to keep it.

Here's a crazy idea: Why not reinstate it as Waller Street, one-way northbound all the way past McKenzie King where it would rejoin, wait for it... Waller Street. It looks like there's room for 2 lanes to veer right there.

Then they could get rid of that curving piece of Nicholas Street which diverges from Nicholas Street between Laurier and McKenzie King.

It would open up a nice part of the block for a park next to the Telfer School of Mgmt. Or even a prime City-owned development parcel.

Let me see if I understand your idea. You want the city to divert Nicholas northbound onto Waller just south of Laurier and then remove the existing northbound lanes.

They would need to keep a southbound lane on Waller to maintain access to the buildings on it south of Laurier and allow buses to go from Mackenzie King to Laurier, though it could end at Nicholas.

The only issue I see is vehicles from the buildings on the southern Waller stub would have difficulty turning onto Waller northbound if all of Nicholas's traffic was diverted onto it (the underground parking entrance for 50 Laurier is there). There are ways that can be resolved though.

City investigating new hole on Rideau Street

The City of Ottawa is investigating the cause of a hole that formed in the middle of Rideau Street Thursday afternoon.

The city said the hole, which is in front of the Hudson's Bay store, just east of Sussex Drive, developed over a sanitary sewer.

"Rideau Street has been blocked to traffic as a precaution and to facilitate the investigation. The city's infrastructure services office has been apprised of this situation," said Steve Cripps, director of O-Train Construction, in an email.

The hole appears to be about two metres in diameter.

OC Transpo has removed its buses from Rideau Street "until further notice" after a hole formed in the road Thursday afternoon.



Routes 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12, 14 and 18 will now pick up passengers on the Mackenzie King Bridge "until further notice," OC Transpo said.

Rideau Street was the site of a massive sinkhole in June 2016 that caused a gas leak, forced the evacuation of nearby businesses, and affected traffic for months.

A city report pinpointed the likely cause of the sinkhole as unstable soil brought about by work on a nearby light rail tunnel.

That's a pretty tiny 'sinkhole'. Looks more like a bad pothole.
