Thanks for the alt route suggestions. Still 10 months out from the road trip. but since we have 3 dates that require early booking of hotels we figured we might as well research our routes. After Kansas City there are very little good alternate routes west to Denver. North from there is better and we have tentatively booked for the Yellowstone area as well. St Johns, and Indianapolis are set dates that we are working around. Boston is set but can be changed. We plan on heading out July 21st so making it to St Johns is no issue with any route we take. and after the Ball Game in Boston we have 3 days to get to Indianapolis. The rest is free time travel.

Why take a main road when a back road works just as well.

This will take you past the Mount Washington Hotel and through Crawford Notch (truly spectacular). This will deposit you back onto on NH16 just north of North Conway. Go 'Cats Go

I've been there and agree. Loved Mount Washington. I am currently boycotting the U.S. for vacations but would love to go back to New Hampshire when Trump is no longer president.

I went for an early morning drive a few weeks back up Highway 40 to the Highwood Pass in Alberta's Kananaskis Country. There's a little bit of autumn colour out there.

If that's your view then you should probably ignore Acajack's advice of sticking to freeways

I'd also ask whether you prefer mountains or architecture. For the latter (scenic villages) I would take US Rte 7 south from Burlington then US Rte 4 to NH (with maybe a pit stop in Hanover) and if at that point you're fed up with small roads you can take the 89-93 straight to Boston.

(I've never driven US 4 in NH so I don't know how picturesque it is.)

With that route though you're kind of skipping the mountains. I am assuming an Albertan tourist would rather see well preserved New England villages than mountains that are dwarfed by the Rockies, but on the other hand, you're an outdoorsy guy so maybe I'm wrong.

Don't do that, those poor people need us more now than ever . . . go down there, tell them they're not alone, that they won't be forgotten, that we will send aid when it all implodes, that we will give them a fair hearing as refugees when the time comes . . . .

Driven the ice road into Tuk. Actually took a cab from Tuk to Inuvik to catch my flight south. This will be interesting to see how the community changes. I don't think next year will be a good year to do the drive. it may be very busy with tourist traffic.Its still on the bucket list though.

You certainly made some good points. I've considered going to places that overwhelmingly voted against Trump (Detroit, Hawaii, California) but I'd rather drive highways in Canada for the time being and Europe if I could afford it.

We thought about staying in Canada, then this trip sorta morphed. It was interesting to be in Indianapolis before the election. anyone we talked to were mortified that Trump was even going to be the nominee. but then we headed out into the country and heard more of the resentment to Washington. We want to see what other areas are feeling especially now after everything that is happening. Plus doing a road trip is always fun.

At least two people have died following a multi-vehicle collision followed by an explosion on Highway 400 near Bradford.

A massive collision involving at least 14 vehicles occurred just after Ontario Provincial Police were called to the scene of a “small collision” around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. The larger collision occurred as traffic stalled, including two fuel tankers and three transport trucks.

The fuel tankers, according to Sgt. Kerry Schmidt exploded on impact.

Schmidt said emergency services are still attempting to clear the area, and are awaiting confirmation as to how many fatalities there were.

“We still don’t even have a confirmed count,” he said. “We’re dealing with a massive scene … fire, explosions, and just absolute carnage and devastation.”

He added that “fire departments from every service in the region” teamed up to tame the blaze.

All lanes on Highway 400 are closed northbound and southbound between Highways 88 and 89. Closures will likely last all day, said Schmidt.

Police are still investigating the cause of the collision.

“I would say it has been the most incredible scene I’ve ever been too,” said Schmidt.

The problem is the morons in front of you that cause you to slam on your brakes. I've driven trucks and it's the cars that are mainly the problem, constantly cutting in front of trucks, slamming on brakes suddenly etc. and somehow thinking a big truck can simply match the performance. It doesn't work that way. Give trucks a little room and respect and things will turn out much differently.

It sounds like in this particular accident the truck driver didn't slow down for traffic that was stopped as a result of an unrelated accident up ahead.

I drive on highways very frequently and over the past year I've been noticing trucks increasingly swerving all over the place or driving very aggressively, and unfortunately I've been noticing it's almost always Ontario or Quebec plates. Even on a recent trip to the US, I saw a truck that looked like it was about to fall off the right hand shoulder, and not to my surprise, Ontario plate.

Anecdotal evidence for sure, but I'm really wondering what's going on with trucks these days.

Immigrant truck drivers from foreign jurisdictions where the rules of the road are just suggestions????

They would be more common in Ontario than most other provinces..........

Immigrants will take any job just to stay here. They do not realize they can say "No". They do not realize our labour laws. And businesses capitalize on this.

It is rather hard to "give room" to vehicles that are currently behind you. I never enter into the space directly in front of trucks, as I don't have a death wish. But some truck drivers will tailgate, and not leave enough room to slow/stop or react because they cannot see shit on account of being directly behind another truck (which is what happened here, apparently).
