I'd also ask whether you prefer mountains or architecture. For the latter (scenic villages) I would take US Rte 7 south from Burlington then US Rte 4 to NH (with maybe a pit stop in Hanover) and if at that point you're fed up with small roads you can take the 89-93 straight to Boston.
(I've never driven US 4 in NH so I don't know how picturesque it is.)
With that route though you're kind of skipping the mountains. I am assuming an Albertan tourist would rather see well preserved New England villages than mountains that are dwarfed by the Rockies, but on the other hand, you're an outdoorsy guy so maybe I'm wrong.
