Why? Because before it was getting gentrified, so to speak, there were so many underground raves, illegal parties at studios, nightclubs, and other things of the sort that attracted young people, and not as many more "normal" established businesses and (affluent) residents.
While it's sad to see a lot of that disappear, great (legal) businesses are popping up all over the place and people are moving in, pushing that scene out. A couple years and we'll see nightlife pick up again that better suits the new demographic there.

Well, we can agree that kids these days suck.

Notwithstanding the busy restaurants that are doing well like 'Cibos', 'Cordova', 'Hermanos' etc. Always folks around in these places, but just a little less wandering as what used to happen. The area is very much alive, just in a different way.

"Chill" is fine (and I like all the establishments you listed above), but it also irks me...
There is such an faux indifference that seems to be built into everyone's own "cool" persona in the "chill" scene these days... I say faux because this crowd is socially conscious, generally very progressive with SJW leanings... so by definition the indifference is false.
So why spend so much effort trying to be so chill an indifferent? It's hilariously lame. Some people are fascinating, and others are boring, but there seems to be less of a sense of adventure now than there was before.
I'm not, nor ever was a nightclub guy, so I'm not talking about that. But once the hour approaches 11 it seems that people retreat to their cliques rather than keep the exchange going.

If we're honest with ourselves, a demolition and new re-development of above properties would do similar wonders... I'm just ready for the saga to end so we can move forward.
