How is it not over the top? It has gold pilasters holding up the bar.

I have seen it all before too, it's dated looking. Like being the height of pretentiousness in the early 2000's. It looks like the kind of thing that was being built in the suburbs.

The black leather couches with the gold strip look like they're from the 80's.

I visit every now and then and they have actually been able to fill most spaces now. I also hope the second phase would commence soon. It is fairly busy on the odd evenings I happen to go there while I waiting for someone to land on YVR.

WRT WeWork taking over upper floors of the Downtown Hudson's Bay -

I hadn't realized that Amazon is taking over the top 6 floors of the Downtown Seattle Macy's.
Apparently Macy's sold off the top 4 floors 2 years ago and sold off 2 more floors this year.
The Downtown Seattle Macy's will only be on the ground floor and basement.

I'm rather surprised by this considering that the beautiful 6th floor men's department is only 5 years old, seems quite successful and it a great environment to shop in. Some of the other upper-floors, 4th and 5th, have never been renovated. Wonder where the men's dept is going to go?

i think they are adjusting to the times, the days of 600,000 + sq ft stores are over. I was reading an article yesterday saying that stores are going to be either high end or low end discount such as nordstrom rack vs nordstrom and hudsons bay needs to go high end now cause it can't be floundering in the middle. They could reduce their store count perhaps, move their furniture and housewares to their home outfitters stores. The stores in europe look great and are smaller.

With regards to Restoration Hardware (now "RH") and their gallery stores, they have been looking in Vancouver. One of their requirements is outdoor space so malls don't usually fit (unless its a lifestyle centre type thing). Their builds are very expensive, not sure how it might work on South Granville unless they were willing to buy.

Restoration Hardware was nice when they started out. Lately their stuff has gotten oversized and over the top. I guess if you're kitting out your empty Shaughnessy mansion it might work, but that's not the way most of Vancouver lives. I had heard they basically treat the South Granville store a showroom for the trade now, they're not really concerned with retail customers.

I'm beginning to wonder if WeWork will take more than 2 floors of Vancouver's HBC building.

The 5th Ave. Lord & Taylor is dropping from 10 floors to 3 floors (to 150,000 sq ft).

I could see the downtown HBC be widdled down to the sub-basement ( Men's could easily go there ) basement ( TopShop ) Main and 2nd ( women's ). That would easily be enough to house all major departments, maybe keep the 3rd for home, bedding etc. 4th, 5th and 6th for WeWork.

This is going way back nearly 30 years when I worked for the Bay. The top floor of the building is offices and staff lounge area. I believe that is the 7th floor. There was no public access to that level. The offices, such as HR that the general public would potentially access were all sprinkled on the lower floors. I believe there is also a sub-sub-basement used for warehousing. Maybe that is just the sub-basement. Lots of space for WeWork.

Just had a look on google maps. The 7th floor is there just recessed back quite a bit and about 1/4 to a 1/3 of the square footage of the other floors. If We Work goes in their, I wonder if they would expand that a bit. Would make for a huge rooftop patio. Likely part of that level also has the penthouse mechanical.

Have you been into a Home Outfitters store recently? It’s very “Bed Bath and Beyond”-esque in these stores (ie: some high end bedding, some mediocre quality product, and a boat load of cheap quality gadget-y stuff). I don’t think Hudson Bay’s high end product should be put alongside Home Outfitter’s crap.

they have to do something with their homegoods either eliminate it or move it out and since they already own outfitters... they have started some testing in winnipeg apparently with changing outfitters to hudson bay home stores. got to think outside the box no reason outfitters has to remain cheap looking it can distinguish itself.

Hudson's Bay says the new stores carry brands such as Le Creuset, Kate Spade, Smeg, Vitamix, Lacoste and Ralph Lauren, as well as brands that it says are exclusive to Hudson's Bay, such as Martha Stewart and Hotel Collection.

the dutch stores look really awesome. Hudsons bay could keep some home stuff like some of the nordstrom stores have small collections in selected stores.

in the old winners spot, that place was a pain to access but it is close to ikea and furniture row along united, a good spot for them

@SpongeG: well who knew! That’s a pretty nice looking store concept! I am pretty sure the HB Home concept is not (yet?) present in Calgary. If the downtown Calgary Bay store ever gets downsized à la Vancouver/Toronto, then it might be a smart move to open a/some Home stores here.
