Except that Canada/US are used to ugly arenas. 99% of them are just a rectangular box and don't look much better than an industrial park warehouse. I've never seen one on this continent with a nice ceiling, for instance.

Laval Place is passable only because the standard is very low in Canada. One would think the wealthy NHL would have nicer arenas than speed skating but it doesn't:

I guess this is another stadium that is currently under construction: the upgrade of the Yardmen Arena in Belleville to welcome the Belleville Senators

The upgraded arena will only seat 4400 people.

Tacoma Dome, although I s'pose niceness is in the eye of the beholder. Considering NA probably has the best facilities for the biggest professional indoor leagues, I find the original premise comment kinda disingenuous.

^ The only arenas with ceiling areas that I ever really noticed were Northlands Coliseum - there was something about that spoke style arrangement that gave it an elegant look, and Maple Leaf Gardens - the bright yellowish off-white attracted the eye upwards.

I guess you could argue that moving the Detroit Pistons downtown from the suburbs (Ann Arbor) might qualify.

Detroit is a special case. The part of downtown where Joe Louis was is relatively intact. The area where the Little Caesars was built had seen a lot of buildings abandoned and/or bulldozed after years of decline. The arena and related development will go a long way to revitalize the area and Detroit as a whole.

That said, I don't agree with the fact that public funds financed the arena, considering Detroit is broke, its citizens are suffering, Canada had to take on the entire bill for a new bridge and related infrastructure on both sides of the border and the Red Wings are one of the richest teams in the NHL.

The Ottawa Civic Centre (aka TD Place Area) has an interesting roof-line.

That one in Switzerland that always hosts the Spengler Cup probably has the nicest arena roof in the world at least in my opinion. Valiant Arena...that's the one. I wonder what kind of additional cost that kind of roof would add to an arena vs the traditional more non-descript one we normally see? I also wonder how it is for concerts?

The Pens old shack Melon arena (Civic Centre) had quite the roof line. Fun fact it was retractable like Rogers Centre.

Either than the saddle dome the only cool current ceiling I can think of is American Airlines center in dallas

The Globen arena in Stockholm does look interesting on the outside but that does not translate to an especially interesting ceiling effect on the inside.

I love that Spengler arena in Davos though.

Dalhousie used to have an arena with an interesting roof. Unfortunately it was torn down.

I live a few hours outside of Edmonton

Our old rink is something special. Built in 1955. Has these huge wooden trusses that are about 5 feet wide at the top. It's a great building

in 2012 we opened the doors to our new arena and we are now building a 400 seat rink beside it which will sadly close the doors to the "blue rink"

Here is our new arena (Imperial oil place). 2100 seats for hockey. They are currently adding luxury suites and a restaurant with ice views. The cool thing about the building is it was built with expansion in mind. another deck can be added with no structural changes needed
