It's interesting you find Buffalo and Arizona to be two of the worst teams. They tanked even worse, and earlier, than the Leafs did but the Leafs are way way ahead in development. The Leafs made their turn around look so ridiculously easy everyone forgets about the teams that get stuck in the mud drafting high picks. Buffalo and Arizona two major examples. And who can forget the Oilers?
I realize the Leafs had the luxury of the 1st overall but many people believe that if Matthews were in the draft a year earlier (he missed it by a couple days) he would have gone 3rd overall behind McDavid and Eichel.
Anyways it's not so easy as tank = be good in a couple years. Some franchises get stuck in tank mode for a decade.
