Phoenixville or West Chester weren't particularly nice either. It is interesting how much perceptions change

It went from 69th Street to Ardmore via what is now the busway. It's why that one stop on the 100 is called "Ardmore Jct" -- the 103 used to cross it there.

This article isn't necessarily about Philly, but it raises some key points that I think can be applied to our city:

My girlfriend grew up near West Chester. We were talking about the Red Arrows and we agreed that the loss of the 104 was bigger than the loss of Regional Rail.

Stupid, stupid, stupid

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette is reporting that the City of Erie is backing Pittsburgh's bid for Amazon's HQ2 and Erie is an almost 2 hour drive away. Meanwhile we have PA suburbs (with zero chance of winning) submitting competing bids to ours -- those officials are so incredibly narrow-minded and pathetic. This is why, despite all our money and all our people, we as a region underpunch our weight in the state capitol. I've always wondered who were those anti-Philadelphia nutjobs that posted comments on the Philly.com website -- now I know who they are.

Yeah, there was another one reported today--Bristol freaking Township.

On the bright side, I guess, Lancaster County included a letter of support for Philly's bid.

"It is because of our close proximity and the easy access via Amtrak that, every day, our workforce heads east and similarly workers from Philadelphia commute west. While our landscapes differ greatly, there are considerably strong business relationships – from health care and higher education to financial services and real estate development - that link our two diverse communities."

Why couldn't the suburban jackasses write something like that?

honestly I dont think it matters. Amazon will rule out outlying locations quickly, it's not going to change anything in regards to final decision.

Released just before the Amazon bid- great timing!

http://centercityphila.org/news/center-city-digest-fall-2017

It's nice to state the problem- but they keep putting out reports that offer no new ideas beyond "if we had lower taxes problems would vanish". CCD keeps talking about the schools as impediment to growth but takes no position on what should be done. They just keep saying the same thing over and over. New governance structure? A new revenue stream? Raising real estate taxes? What is their proposal to make a difference?

Yep. All these zero chance burbs bids are the personification of the insane problems with have in this state with people's attitudes towards its marquee city. In Boston, you have an entirely separate city Cambridge viewing itself as the part of the Boston eco-system (and they're not submitting their own exclusive bid, which would have been impressive). Here we have rinky dink burbs who'd sooner nuke their state's only chance due to bizarre ego and a total lack of recognition that they are Philadelphia's metro area. Perfect example of this disconnect: Chicago metro area is called Chicagoland, Philadelphia's? The Delaware valley.

I think people are being way too quick to criticize the Philly area re: the Amazon proposal and the supposed lack of suburban support. To be clear, this definitely is not unique to the Philly area, although I'd agree that it's a bit more pronounced due to the literally hundreds of local governments that could do much more to work collaboratively and regionally.

That being said, using the example of Boston in this case, you can find no fewer than 11 Amazon bids being submitted in Eastern Massachusetts alone: https://www.boston.com/news/business/201...of-new-england-cities-bidding-for-amazon

The DC area, also, is seeing bids from multiple large suburban counties, in addition to Washington, DC itself: https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/...6804c2_story.html?utm_term=.649c47484abc

The fact of the matter is that regional cooperation/planning is a fantastic goal and ideal, but it's often very hard to accomplish, particularly when there's a massive essentially "winner take all" economic benefit involved.

I think I'm more sensitive to it because their is for sure a real animus towards Philadelphia from other parts of the state that feel visceral.

At least the governor didn't chose a location, like Christie did.

Londonderry, NH submitted a bid touting its proximity to Boston, but at the same time trashing Boston for being overcrowded, wall-to-wall traffic, "decaying".

Ugh... it's like not playing by the rules.

Who knows what Amazon is really going to look at, or what they actually care about (i.e. have they already made up their mind, are they only really interested in 2-3 locations, etc.) but other nearby municipalities submitting bids isn't going to hurt a city's bid. Amazon won't care about that lol.

Here is a well written article pointing out all of the headaches and other negative effects Amazon has brought to Seattle. Some of these issues would be lessened in a city like Philadelphia with lots of vacant land for housing and a big metro to absorb new arrivals. But still I worry how much 50,000 new employees would change the city.

Geez, why does Philly Mag sell Philly short on this? I just get the feeling it some liberal douche that doesn't understand the overall benefits/positives outweigh the alleged negatives.
