But seriously, usually it takes an entire community to hold up or reroute a SkyTrain line. Now two art galleries can do the same thing.
I think a crotchety old person living in a house can do the same thing.

I had a feeling something about the Emily Carr campus was going to cause problems if the renewal of the neighborhood did not.
It's harder to bulldoze a gallery for aspiring and talented artists than it is a warehouse full of asbestos and contaminated soil.

It's probably all moot because the GNWC trust will probably want to redevelop that site anyways.

Here's the report will all those maps:

GWAC By-election All Candidates Meeting - M Line comments

This twitter user https://twitter.com/moebius_strip was kind enough to live tweet the council candidates debate put on by GWAC. There's some interesting snippets on their feed, but I thought these were particularly relevant.

Vote for Graves, Murphy or Bremmer. Got it.

Not surprised if so. Purely anecdotal, but a family member who works in Cardona's neighbourhood house says he's a useless pretty boy who's mostly good at buttering people up.

You actually think they will have any input on whether a Broadway line gets built. Hilarious.

Given an ability to pick between a councilor that shares your stances on certain issues and a councilor that opposes them, the choice seems blindingly obvious. Or would you rather no-show until we end up with a council full of LRT types like Surrey?

Came across this article from the Tyee:

Underground Spaces Already Prepped For Broadway Subway Stations
https://thetyee.ca/News/2017/10/16/Underground-Spaces-Broadway-Subway/

Quote:
Both Brown and Doble said that the space beneath Crossroads at Cambie is being used by tenant Whole Foods.

The Tyee called the Whole Foods, but customer service directed all questions regarding the subway space to the city. Whole Foods denied The Tyee a visit to the space.

Two former employees confirmed the existence of the large space with The Tyee. It’s located on the Broadway side of the store and reached through a service corridor by the meat and poultry department. One side of the room is angled, as if for a staircase.

Some staff have a nickname for the space: the subway room. Managers told staff that it was set aside by the developer for Broadway rapid transit, according to an employee of five years.

“I would describe the room as cavernous,” said the employee. “It’s concrete, has a very high ceiling, about two to three stories high.”

She said Whole Foods used the subway room for storage and seasonal crafts.

“Things like if at Halloween they wanted to put craft-made paper bats around the entire store, the paper bats would be prepped there,” she said. “It was the best room on site to make crafts en masse, because there was space for it. You could let the glue on 200 paper bats dry in there because there’s room to spread them out.”

Note that the article referenced for the 988 Broadway location is dated 2015 and later articles have indicated that the subway entrance will be elsewhere and only an emergency exit will be on that site.

Regarding 988 Broadway - this is from that project's thread:

Quote:
There was an article somewhere that quoted the owners as saying that this building / corner was no longer TransLink's referred site for a station entrance - so there was speculation about the Scotiabank site as well as a mid-block location closer to the hospitals.

Repost from the Broadway Subway thread (February 2016):

The presumption is that if the tunnel is under Broadway itself, then the Scotiabank site would seem like the alternate place for a large stationhouse - or it could be at Laurel on Broadway, closer to the hospitals, if the Oak Street bus can still stop in front of the station.

Otherwise, maybe a tunnel under 10th Ave., but that's not quite consistent with this building retaining an emergency exit.

Plans for the building originally called for the inclusion of a station entrance for the Broadway Subway, the future underground extension of SkyTrain’s Millennium Line to Arbutus or as far as UBC. However, according to BlueSky Properties CEO Dale Bosa, those plans have been canceled.

“It’s our understanding that the station has moved and won’t be here on the site, so we don’t know the exact location… we did have some communication with the City of Vancouver that the station will not be on the site now,” Bosa told Vancity Buzz.

He adds that although a large entrance is no longer needed, the building will still provide space for an emergency access into the underground station structure. Some plans for the building are being reworked, mainly with a reconfiguration of the building’s permanent retail space and expansion of the office lobby. Under the originals plans, temporary retail space would have occupied the corner space designated for the station entrance.

Vancity Buzz reached out to the City of Vancouver for comment on the precise station location. The following statement was received from a spokesperson: “The City, in partnership with TransLink, has been working with development projects along the Broadway corridor to secure provisional access to future stations. The primary entrance for the future station near Oak Street is still to be confirmed at a future stage of the project’s design.”

Interesting to note, the former Scotiabank space that's for lease at 1004 W Broadway has a one year termination clause. Hopefully that's a sign they are planning on starting to clear sites for the subway construction in a year or so.

They can exercise it whenever so I doubt you can say that means construction next year.

Read somewhere in previous post about location of Millennium extension stations that there is likely a station at Laurel/Broadway , instead of Oak/Broadway. I totally agree with this suggestion simply Laurel/Broadway services VGH so much better. Since VGH is the largest employment center along the extension, it will also be much more convenient for visitors , people going to hospital precinct for tests , procedures. Oak/Broadway just seem a little far if you just has day surgery done. Btw , hope they name this station as Hospital/Broadway station to indicate major landmark.

That would make some sense as there's westbound 99 B-line stops between Willow and Laurel. I think the eastbound 99 stops at Heather, but I'm not 100% sure. Both those stops are only a few blocks distant from Cambie, and there's no 99 stops at Oak.

I agree that a station at Laurel would be better than the Scotiabank site.
The emergency exit at 988 Broadway would be at the other end of the platform.

The Oak St. bus turns onto Broadway, so there can be a bus stop right out front (northbound bus). Not sure about the southbound bus.

I object to the idea of "emergency exits". Every access to the station should be a fully functional, faregated access point and they should be located at each end of the station, ideally with access from both sides of the street.

You can see how many of the former "emergency" exits at Expo line stations have ended up having to be retrofitted to become full function access points. Let's get it right the first time on Broadway.

probably wont happen with Translink wanting everyone to go through 1 entrance/exit. hell that underground walkway at Stadium is still full of sand and gravel.

I can only assume you're not an architect or engineer. Where do go if theres a fire?

Do you want big bulkhead doors in the middle of each station?

TBH, that second exit is kinda useless now that there isn't a building lobby the staircase was expected to ascend into. At the current time if they were to reopen it all you get is the ability to cross the street without getting wet.

Edited: Huh, just after I posted this I found that there was an article submitted in 1996 urging that BC Transit reconsider closing the Beatty Street East entrance, citing future capacity improvements.
http://council.vancouver.ca/960725/vtc2.htm

I agree with the above document aside from:
Quote:
The connection should be made accessible to wheelchair users as a part of future developments.
...which makes no sense as there is already a elevator in the station at Beatty Street level that serves all three levels of the station.

There are some valid reasons for wanting a single point of entry, namely that it makes controlling crowding much easier with fewer staff.

During the recent switch trouble at Main Street during the afternoon rush, SkyTrain staff had to resort to closing Granville and Stadium stations entirely (and with much difficulty) because of excessive crowds and safety concerns on the platforms. They tried to restrict access to Stadium station to solely from the Expo boulevard side, but it was so crowded that staff had trouble even getting to the Beatty street side to lower the grilles.

Umm.... isn't it better to have more and bigger exits in the event of a fire?
