Are you serious? Do you really think its that simple? I don't know how to check, but my guess is that more then half the council seats run effectively unopposed.

If there was ever a shinning example for the need of term limits, City council is it. I'd suggest one 2 year term, followed by one 3 year term, then one 4 year term. Nine years in total as a max (then go to jail for 4 years!)

Bucks County ad agency to move HQ to Old City

Quote:
A Bucks County integrated branding agency will move its offices to Old City, joining the growing list of marketing communications agencies making moves in Philadelphia.

Garfield Group was established in 1990, and it's since worked with clients on public relations, digital marketing, social interaction, content strategy and media amplification.

The Newtown, Bucks County-based agency this month will move its headquarters to 325 Chestnut St. in Old City, in the newly renovated Constitution Place.

The 13-story building also houses Buddakan, Cosi and Mrs. K’s, among other retailers.

Garfield Group will occupy 5,000 square feet of space, with an additional 1,700 square feet for a balcony.

Garfield Group will be open for business on Oct. 23.

exactly. most of these people run unopposed- so no challengers but people expect "retirement" or sudden changes of heart from these people. I doubt a politician who routinely runs unopposed really thinks there is a groundswell of opposition in their district.

Or people can stick to what they are doing now- posting complaints/insults on various sites/blogs online. It seems to be working wonders in changing the status quo.

How exactly would such a change come about if new people don't takeover Council? yeah I agree- they run unopposed and generally win with low numbers- the type of people who could probably be beaten if they were really challenged. They can't force people not to run. At some point blame for the status quo has to be placed on more than just a handful of people in city hall. I know that's not popular because it's easier to play the victim and cry woe is me, but it's reality. A few years ago most would've thought there was no way Helen Gym or Allan Domb would be on council or that Wilson Goode would loose or that Bukovitz would lose. Hell, in 2007 the "experts" were convinced Nutter couldn't win because he wasn't a traditional candidate cozy with the unions, etc.

Belmont Behavioral Hospital opens $15M outpatient care center

Quote:
Belmont Behavioral Hospital completed the first phase of its $100 million campus revitalization project with the opening of a $15 million outpatient care center.

The construction of the three-story, 38,000-square-foot center along Monument Road in the Wynnefield section of the city is the first part of the renovation plan by the hospital’s new owner: Acadia Healthcare of Franklin, Tenn.

Acadia, which acquired the psychiatric care hospital for $35 million from Einstein Healthcare Network in 2015, is preparing to tear down some smaller building on the campus to make space for a 202,622-square-foot replacement hospital expected to open in the fall of 2019.

Understanding the politics of Philly is way above my pay grade. I'll leave that to smart people like yourself.
There does seem to be a turn over of sorts with 'at large' council persons, but when was the last time a district council person lost a contested election? It certainly doesn't happen very often, outside of the district councilman being arrested.

no one runs. Hence my point. If people are going to say these people are locked it in would help to have evidence that they have defeated all comers- most haven't beat anyone of note ever.

this is very awesome and will make life so, so much easier for the folks who rely on this route. hopefully this sort of service gets expanded throughout parts underserved by other transit options.

But they do run against them...in the primary. I watched a guy spend $200k of his own money to try and challenge the incumbent in the primary...and lost.

One guy and a very flawed candidate. I didn't say ANYONE could show up and win. You would obviously have to be likeable- not rocket science when getting votes is the key. He was the wrong person based on his history.

And he actually still did pretty well, all things considered. Garnering something like 37% of the vote, I believe. A win was not expected. I agree that the key to breaking down the little fiefdom and party machine politics of Philly is more challenges to council members. We are on the precipice of change. We are seeing it in other positions like comptroller and District Attorney with Butkowitz and Krasner.

and in terms of at large council persons. Obviously some incumbents would be tough to beat- others not so much, but no one tries so you get status quo.
