The three big options for 2026 or 2030 in the US are Reno/Tahoe, SLC and Denver. Out of those three, SLC is still #1 bc they've hosted before. Relatively modern city within 30 minutes of all the venues. Big airport with easy connections to the venues. Mass transit in place to the venues. Multiple venues already built, just in need of refurbishment.
Denver's a bigger city, has similar indoor venues for ice skating and hockey, has Mile High for opening ceremonies, but the ski resorts are much farther away and more difficult to get to.
Reno/Tahoe has the ski venues, but indoor venues are lacking, and no good option for the opening ceremonies. Univ Nevada Reno football stadium holds 26,000. Rice-Eccles seats 60,000. There's no Reno arenas for hockey or ice skating that are Olympic-worthy. Their events center seats 11,000.
So it'll come down to SLC and Denver I suspect, if the USOC is thinking about the costs to the host cities to put on a successful games. SLC is still clearly the winner when it comes to infrastructure, transportation, venue readiness, etc. Airport access is a wash for the most part, Denver may have more direct flights but SLC is not far behind and isn't a remote small airport like Reno.
