On tonight's Curb Your Enthusiasm, an exterior shot of a courthouse in LA is actually the Frank Moss Courthouse:

Salt Lake bid for 2026 Winter Games gets new push after Innsbruck referendum fails

By Lisa Riley Roche
https://www.deseretnews.com/article/...dum-fails.html

SALT LAKE CITY — There's a new push for Salt Lake City to seek another Olympics now that Innsbruck, Austria, has pulled out of contention
after voters rejected a referendum backing a bid for the 2026 Winter Games.

"I think we all thought (Innsbruck) would be the leading candidate for 2026, but given the referendum, things are very much up in the air,"
Fraser Bullock, the chief financial officer of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, said Sunday.

Bullock said the referendum, coupled with a decision by the Swiss government last week to postpone financially backing a bid by Sion,
"suggests that there are very few candidates, viable candidates for 2026, let alone 2030."...

Like I've said before, it's not the IOC that will be the problem for Salt Lake. The real issue is the USOC. Do they want Salt Lake?

The three big options for 2026 or 2030 in the US are Reno/Tahoe, SLC and Denver. Out of those three, SLC is still #1 bc they've hosted before. Relatively modern city within 30 minutes of all the venues. Big airport with easy connections to the venues. Mass transit in place to the venues. Multiple venues already built, just in need of refurbishment.

Denver's a bigger city, has similar indoor venues for ice skating and hockey, has Mile High for opening ceremonies, but the ski resorts are much farther away and more difficult to get to.

Reno/Tahoe has the ski venues, but indoor venues are lacking, and no good option for the opening ceremonies. Univ Nevada Reno football stadium holds 26,000. Rice-Eccles seats 60,000. There's no Reno arenas for hockey or ice skating that are Olympic-worthy. Their events center seats 11,000.

So it'll come down to SLC and Denver I suspect, if the USOC is thinking about the costs to the host cities to put on a successful games. SLC is still clearly the winner when it comes to infrastructure, transportation, venue readiness, etc. Airport access is a wash for the most part, Denver may have more direct flights but SLC is not far behind and isn't a remote small airport like Reno.

Oh gotcha, I was looking at the line on Wikipedia saying the stadium was looking to expand again to get up to 55,000-60,000, thought that had already happened. That will probably happen in advance of hosting I'm sure.

I think they're going to announce an RES expansion after this season. They commissioned a new feasibility study recently and it seems like Chris Hill has been more open to the idea than in the past.

In South Jordan, 10600 S turns into South Jordan Parkway on the west side of I-15, but Google labels it like the other streets. They think the street is named Jordan Parkway, but they put an S in front of it. When "South" is part of the proper name, you don't abbreviate it. It's literally nuts.

And Google, for some reason, has started dropping the first cardinal direction on addresses. So 846 E 900 South becomes 846 900 South. There could be an 846 W 900 S, so we do need all of the cardinal directions in Salt Lake.

Anyone know anyone at Google that we can explain this to?
The problem is Google does not accept cardinal directions on addresses but has them on the street as a prefix. We had a discussion about this issue on the Google MapMaker forum before MapMaker was discontinued, but I doubt Google paid any attention to it.

You can "Report a data problem" if there is any street missing the incorrect but needed for navigation prefix. Or "Send feedback" to report the issue to the developers. If enough people report it maybe they will pay attention. You might also be able to post it on their issue tracker.

Not wanting to take pot shots, but I will. I had some revealing conversations with three good friends of mine. Highly educated and have worked close with city and county leadership. In brief summary, all three have said that the mayor's office SLC + county are incompetent and non pro-active when dealing with development. The RDA is a bureaucratic mess full of people who chase their tails. Not encouraging.

Some of these government types are taking credit for landing the large employers locating in the NW quadrant. They have not been responsible. Always two sides of everything, but I trust my friends.

SLC is moving forward in exploring an Olympic bid. I'd love to see it happen.

Very nice look and I love it is mixed use with commercial, retail, hotel and residential. Hopefully they decide to add another 2 floors of residential.

I am guessing this is probably about 340' to 350'. While I wish it was taller, this will be great (with or without the possible 2 additional floors of residential).

Any idea of a time frame for construction to start?

Also, I hope that they succeed in their project and do build more in the city.

They want to start construction within a year. Unlike the VOID, Held has an established portfolio and capital.

Very cool. As it is an established developer, I do think they will follow through on their plans. With the location, I can see the commercial space being picked up quickly by law firms.

Great work asies. This looks like a cool project.

Now where are our rendering/mapping specialists who can superimpose the effect this tower would have on our skyline? I like that this building would stretch our skyline both south and west.

Was this designed by the same architects as the Void? No, it's a better design, but still has some problems.

I do love that it's mixed-use. We need a lot of mixed-use towers in SLC.
