Melbourne being a very new city is known for its tall towers, and the fact that they embrace new ideas like having a huge casino and new malls in the city centre, creating new attractions for locals and visitors alike . Both cities invest aggressively on transportation infrastructure. One is a city with its enormous wealth of culture but with a contemporary mindset, while the other is a modern city that can keep redefining itself by being open minded. That's why they are beating Vancouver time and again while our traffic congestions, drug problems and homelessness become worse because of people who think that viaducts, malls and tall buildings are evil.
Ooh, a casino, that will put is right up there with Mukilteo!

^^ This video looks like it's taken by a coil of spring boinging down the mall. It looks a lot wider than Brentwood Mall, but I think Brentwood would be more exciting.

I think we have the worst drug ghetto in the whole world as even a renowned drug decriminalization adcocate from Portugal was shocked at what he saw here. He also said decriminalization of drugs here won't solve our problem. Interesting! I think this city must do much more, even introducing tougher measures, instead of letting the problem fester out of control.

https://www.straight.com/news/961186/van...ays-fentanyl-should-be-declared-national

Dr. João Goulão has received international attention for the lead role he played in Portugal’s fundamental shift in drug policy. It culminated with a massive investment in treatment options and, in 2001, the decriminalization of illicit narcotics, including cocaine and heroin. In subsequent years, such progressive policies resulted in invitations from around the world.

This morning (September 6), Goulão visited Vancouver for his first time. He began the trip with a tour of addiction and harm-reduction programs in the Downtown Eastside. Goulão said he was shocked by what he saw.

“This concentration, in a single spot, I was not expecting it,” he told reporters who met on the street after he completed his walk around the neighbourhood.

“Even in the difficult ‘90s, when we had a huge epidemic of heroin, the population was quite different from what I have seen here,” Goulão continued. “We cannot compare to the size and the kind of population that you have here. And we are not facing, yet—I hope we will never face—the problem of fentanyl.”

CKNW’s Jeremy Lye asked if he believes Canada’s fentanyl crisis should be declared a national health emergency.

“I really think so,” Goulão responded. “Because of the number of overdose deaths that you are having. It’s a very, very important problem of public health. And so you have to deal with it in a brave way.”

The number that Goulão referred to is expected to surpass 1,500 in B.C. this year, up from 269 fatal overdoses just five years earlier, in 2012.

If there are 1500 fatal overdoses in a year, how on Earth can any addicts remain? Are as many British Columbians falling into that downward spiral in such numbers to replace those that leave the market? The numbers have been puzzling me.

You don't necessarily need to be an addict to be affected by the infiltration of fentanyl into the local drug supply. If an occasional user gets a bad batch, they're just as affected. And yes, there are many more than just a few thousands recreational drug users throughout BC.

Well there's a huge population of drug users across the province and these huge numbers in deaths just started in the past two years so it's not necessarily people being replaced by new users but an existing huge community being hit by fentanyl (it was detected in around 80% of overdose deaths)

Even without fentanyl, our city is definitely badly hit by all kinds of drug use. Just see the masses of people physically and mentally scarred by all kinds of drugs when you walk anywhere downtown, with many being concentrated around East Hastings and Granville. The deaths by fentanyl/opiod are just part of the bigger problem of drug use in Vancouver. Why is Vancouver so bad compared to other places? Why do so many people here need drugs to get away from the reality of life? Is it our culture of acceptance of drug use that helps to promote it among the youths and even adults? I see tourists genuinely shocked when they veer off Gastown and accidentally experience the sights and sounds of the East Hastings neighbourhood. What does it take to end this scourge?

Vancouver has always been like that, life as a port town.

Drug use is rampant in all socioeconomic classes here

Outside the city here in BC there is also a significant drug use problem.

Ron.

Our climate also encourages the rest of Canada's homeless to migrate here. It's a national issue with a local budget.

Re-opening mental health facilities would be a great step in the right direction, one of the few things the NDP has done right so far in its tenure.

Beware of the Killer Park Balloons.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/balloon-ban-vancouver-city-park-1.4287366

A Vancouver Park Board commissioner is calling for a ban on balloons which he says can be dangerous to both wildlife and children.

Green Party Park Board Commissioner Stuart Mackinnon says the latex or plastic globes may be whimsical, but even the green ones aren't really green.

His motion calls for a ban on balloon use in city parks and recreation centres, the very places where balloon are often part of the draw at events.

I visited Queen Elizabeth Park yesterday and was sad to notice that our greedy city has extended pay parking to all roads inside the park. It only used to be the parking lot at the top, but now everything is pay parking. This is a shame, as I don't feel like visiting the place having to pay for parking.

There are still few free pockets in the surrounding area, but for how long. Booo, Vancouver!

VANCOUVER'S HOMELESSNESS

Lower Mainland homelessness growing 4 times faster than total population
http://dailyhive.com/vancouver/homelessness-vancouver-fraser-valley-count-october-2017

This is a pressing concern, a scourge that our cities, particularly Vancouver, are facing these past few decades. Homelessness issues are tied to drug problems that our cities are facing. However, elected politicians do not seem to have the will to solve it once and for all, either by carrot or by stick. This evening there is a discussion panel session at the St Andrew's Wesley church where candidates for the upcoming Vancouver Civic elections will be attending to talk about this problem. Those of you who can, please attend and voice your concerns, suggestions, etc, or direct any questions to the candidates. Making a presence sends a strong message to the politicians that Vancouverites are very concerned about this issue.
