And then city administration put quite a bit of work into a Victoria Park concept.

I'm not going to make a full-throated defence of Nenshi or the city's every words and actions (because they don't deserve that), but neither do they deserve accusations of blowing off CSEC.

Nenshi has repeatedly stated he is welcome to ideas that include "public money for public benefit". He has practically begged CSEC to follow through. And to me, CSEC is asking for the money, so they need to back it up.

If you feel city council ought to be more generous, that's cool, you're entitled to your opinion. I'm happy to have a council that is not reflexively blowing away $500 million. That's 20 Peace Bridges. Or 1,000 Bowfort Towers.
That city administration analysis you refer to is a big reason why people have had it with Nenshi. They included grossly inflated costs and items that need to be dealt with regardless of whether or not CalgaryNEXT gets built in that location.

Nenshi's "public benefit" came AFTER he told CSEC that he was dead set against public money going toward a pro sports team. What support he has shown has been very lukewarm and it's been totally tied to what he and the administration want to see happen.

Where did I say city council should be more generous? I'm not against it as long as what we get in return is going to have long-term tangible benefits to our economic well-being and quality of life.

Media like this and from other places might look good on Calgary for a short period of time. After all the dust settles with the city holding steady against the new arena, Calgary glows in the limelight of liberal media - for a very short time, and then they've moved on to something else, leaving only the reality of the situation - Calgary is a backwater city that couldn't come up with a new arena, and for years people gripe about not being able to get the large events and concerts, even worse yet the possibility of the team moving.
And those liberal journalists? Well, they sure as hell aren't going to help get concerts here, or get a team back here, and they aren't going to be able clear Calgary reputation as a backwater city.

I mean, clearly, so much of Edmonton's flagging, sad, little ego is tied up in their hockey success that they needed to sign a scam of a deal to give a sweetheart arena over to (Oilers owner) Darryl Katz. "I'm afraid we're not that pathetic," she said. "We're just not that pathetic, as a city."

How will Chabot come out in support of an arena deal that puts out more tax payer monies than what the CoC has currently proposed and sell it as a better deal to voters? Quite a conundrum indeed.

Nenshi's campaign people couldn't have asked for a better scenario than what is now developing - they could probably almost go on cruise control right now and let the other contenders muck it out for second/third/whatever place.
Nenshi's campaign people may have misplayed the shot also. His numbers aren't great, and if it comes down to a two man race I believe he's done.

Well said! I'll add that those liberal journalists will do nothing to clear our reputation. It's time for Calgary and Alberta to stop kowtowing to groups who would love nothing more than to see us destroyed. They don't care if we impose a carbon tax, elect a left-wing government, etc. We need to go back to the days when we did what is best for us and stop worrying what the rest of the country thinks of us.

The same liberal media that absolutely bashes the crap out of Edmonton to make herself feel superior? Frankly, I'm surprised that the National Post would publish such inflammatory biased opinions by one of its reporters.

By throwing taxpayers money at a private company's place of business? Personally, I'd rather be fiscally responsible and look good at the same time when we have the option, like now.

What reputation do you want cleared?

Were a land locked province with little value outside of a resource that the entire world is trying to cut back on using. I think we should care what they think of us.

Frankly, this province displays some of the worst bigotry, racism and selfishness in the entire country and it flies against everything that makes us Canadian. Our reputation isn't great regardless.

Complete nonsense! Do you even live in Alberta because it sounds like you're getting your information from biased eastern media with a huge agenda.

I live in Calgary. I'm getting my information first hand, albeit from a loud minority.

I’m looking at all the proof I need in the last couple pages of this thread.

"The Flames wanted a lot more than just an arena"

Originally proposed to the City back in February, the Flames’ offer reflects a vision that features a whole lot more than just an arena for the Flames.

According to the Globe’s report, the Flames would have participated financially – presumably with their proposed $275 million contribution – to the construction of a new arena and an adjacent practice arena. In addition, the Flames would be provided the following by the City:
  • The construction of a public plaza for festivals and events adjacent to the arena
  • The option to buy and develop land adjacent to the arena
  • Approval over the Victoria Park redevelopment plan
  • Part of the revenue from the Cowboys Casino (which currently goes to the Stampede)
  • All of the parking revenues from arena events (which, aside from Flames-owned lots, currently goes to the Stampede)
  • The flood insurance, paid for by the City
  • The provincial property taxes, covered by the City
  • Free transit service for anybody with a ticket to an event at the arena

In the interview, Mr. King said it was "inappropriate" for someone to leak the document. "Somebody was playing fast and loose with their ethics and I think that's a damn shame," he said.

Yeah, real ethical dilemma that somebody would expose the public to the slam dunk of a deal the Flames were generously offering to the city.
