This photo is a bit better. I never realized how bad and stains that building looked. I’m glad they are painting it. I think the darker color will look nice, but I hope they do a few coasts because it looks really blotchy right now. They should also change the black parts of the sign to white. The Black starts to get hard to see from a block away or so.

Breen Homes submitted a planning application for new apartments at 606 W North Temple, the site of the old Biomat building:

No real information is included, so hopefully someone can provide more details, but I'm hoping they reuse the current building.

It looks like they may just be cleaning the building and putting a sealing compound on it, in which case it will probably return to more or less its original shade after a while, I think.

I'll glad for something happening there. Unfortunately, that building is in really horrible shape, and I would shocked if they attempted to reuse it. Whatever they do, it had better have ground floor retail!

They are just cleaning the exterior, I'm guessing that the darker areas will lighten up as the surface dries, and that most of the darkness you see that photo is just from being wet from the cleaning.

Some minor development news:

https://www.deseretnews.com/article/...-Building.html

Quote:
SALT LAKE CITY — The Ken Garff Building, 405 S. Main, was renamed the Washington Federal Bank Building during a ceremony Tuesday. The newly renamed building will be home to the bank’s regional headquarters as well as one of its branches.

“The renaming of the Ken Garff Tower is a reflection of Washington Federal’s commitment to Salt Lake City and our intent as a bank, and local business, to being an active member of this community,” Brent Beardall, Washington Federal’s president and CEO said in a statement.

Beardall was on hand Tuesday night when new, LED signage on the building was lit for the first time. The signage, created by local firm YESCO, was designed to align with the historic feel of the 1950s-era building, the company said. The 12-story building is recognized by historians as the first "international-style" skyscraper built west of the Mississippi River.

In 2005, Wasatch Property Management spent more than $12.5 million to restore and renovate the building.

Washington Federal, which was founded in Ballard, Washington, celebrated its 100th anniversary in April. The bank has 10 locations in Utah, including seven in the Salt Lake area.
A Regional HQ in the Downtown area. This is good as it wasn't poached by one of the 'burbs.

I do wonder if this also opens the possibility of the Garff family building a new HQ building downtown or possibly moving into a planned building.

This study ranks SLC as the 9th most suitable market for Amazon HQ2. Interesting that the other cities in the top 10 are all basically top 10 in market size. Interesting to see SLC among those cities.

Yeah, I'm gathering more information for a write-up. I toured the building last spring, could be a great project.

9th out of 35, that's a pretty good ranking considering all the other cities who are above 9. Also, it is Salt Lake City, not Draper.

Anyone know anything about 151 state? Or whether or not the Regent is going back to its original design? It's been what, two years for these two?

Told y’all. A large international airport with global connectivity is a big deal. With that, I’m still predicting Atlanta gets the Amazon second headquarters. In my opinion, I’m thinking Amazon is looking more east coast, could be wrong on that though.

I also see Raleigh as a dark horse city to get it. They have a strong university presence, young smart work force, cost of living is low and it definitely is an up and coming city. It also doesn’t hurt that Delta has been growing and expanding RDU lately.

Raleigh has terrible transit options, which Amazon emphasized they need. Although, Raleigh metro area has a Wake County Transit plan, which hopes to implement 37 miles of commuter rail, among other things, and their plan has a photo of a Frontrunner train as an example.
Amazon may not want to wait several years for a transit to be built that when completed will still be behind other cities, SLC among them.

You’re funny! Like I said, it’s probably going to Atlanta though.

The Horsley. Amazing building. Probably the most important historic commercial structure on the west side but a very very tough site. I negotiated it out of bankruptcy and had it under contract in 2015 and walked after digging in. I was going to put in a distillery in the main floor and basement and do a B&B renovation upstairs. I had to walk after 3rd party reports but one good thing came of it: I was able to get full-blown distilleries and breweries allowed in the TSA zones in SLC, so there's that (more on that angle later). A prominent builder, which I am not, chased it after me and couldn't land it. It then sold for too much money and has traded hands three times in the last two years, which is why it has sat as a cold shell with its windows removed (!!ACK!!) last winter. No parking, the lot is basically the building envelope. The previous owner wanted to knock it over and pave it for parking it for Grifolds (Biomat) in 2012 but ran into the Sugarhole ordinance. They lopped off all the land around it, built the new improved Biomat and encumbered it with some weird easements. I wish the new owner all the luck in the world as it really needs to be loved. Maybe he found a parking solution, which is what held everybody else back, along with the need for full seismic, roof, facade, etc. It was always an important part of the Guadalupe neighborhood and I'd love to see that old dame treated right. Here is a great history of the Horsley Building: http://fairparkcommunity.org/?p=60#.WdY1DGi3xPY

On another note, can somebody tell me who the moderators of this page are? They seem to be all over the place with their censorship. I've had a bunch of posts deleted and I need some clarity on the community before I waste any more time here. I am a small-beans developer with some fun stuff in the horn but I can't waste my time posting things that evaporate while the anti-SLC trolls run wild. Thx.
