just saw an outside article that says the north concourse will be operational in 2021 and not 2020.if true this delays the demolition of the present terminal buildings and makes the east concourse construct by 2025 not possible.this is not a local article but in a major airports construction news.most interesting.a local company here is doing that north concourse construction starting in january 2018.major difference now in the construction timeline for the ground level trax line at airport.airport saying two years at most to build and UTA saying one year or less.welcome to salt lake city airport where everything is happening but there is nothing going on......

but the scheduled opening of the east Concourses was initially 2024 anyways. The north Concourse is far away enough that it's construction doesn't impact the south concourse... and demolition of concourses B, C, D isn't scheduled until 2021-2024.

Once terminal drive serves the new terminal, construction can begin on the trax line (so before the opening of the terminal). The trax line does not get in the way of the old Terminal demolition. The north Concourse has nothing to do with the trax line...

I'm excited to see how the airport 'canyon' turns out. The pedant in me wonders how in the world they are going to keep dust off of the fabric fins.

I wonder the same thing... maybe they'll just vacuum it every 3 months or so? Im worried that people will be able to stain the fabric (on the departures level you could reach out and touch it). Hopefully it doesn't yellow over time... that being said, something that wasn't mentioned is that stage lights will be projecting colors all over the fabric, something that hasn't been appearing in the renderings. So that will hopefully hide any issues with the surface of the fabric. I imagine that Rainier has been very particular about what's used for the fabric...

The idea is that UTA will commit to pay $15 million to build the at-grade design. If Salt Lake City wants the elevated version - and it looks like they do - then they will pay the extra $50 million to upgrade. This money would come from a tax increase on tourist-related things, like rental cars and hotel rooms, so it wouldn't burden the citizens.

So - and this will prove how petty I am about the whole issue - I've flip-flopped again and now want the elevated station. The advantages of the elevated version is that 1) there is no 150-foot walk to get into the airport and 2) the station is pretty much inside the airport already, so it will be easy to find for visitors.

And honestly what could be better than paying for transit with a rental-car tax?

I have felt like the 150' distance thing has been overblown. It seems to me that the ground floor trax option would be a shorter walk for people arriving by plane. The baggage carousels are on the ground floor so they get their bags and just walk out and east to trax. With the elevated, they have to take an elevator or escalator up a level then cross a very long skybridge over to the garage and then east to the elevated trax station.

Help me understand the flow of the new terminal. I know they have that welcome center/mini check-in/bag drop in the garage on the 2nd level, but is the regular terminal check-in on the 3rd level of the main terminal building? If so, I guess it is more convenient for trax arrivals to jsut get off the train and go to the garage welcome center. For the ground level, I could see the issue for those arriving on trax that they have to take 2 escalators/elevators to get to the main check-in.

That makes an additional question- Where will the economy parking shuttles drop off? Will they drop off on the ground level and then you have to ride up those same 2 escalators to get to main terminal check-in or are they dropping off on the elevated 3rd floor, circling around again to pick up those who need to get to the economy lot?

As an update, I cautiously ventured into the comment section of the Trib article and saw this comment-

"Here is a correction to the story. At the main terminal check-in and airline ticket counters are on Level 3 or the top level. Level two is for TSA security lines and for baggage claim. The ground level is 4 custom and Border Patrol, international arrivals and Airport employee check-in / screening. Check in on level 2 only exist at the Gateway Center which is adjacent to the parking garage and the arrival point of the original tracks option.
With this at Ground arrival option passengers would have to travel more than 150 ft to the elevators. Then take the elevator or escalators up to the third floor with their baggage to check their bags and check in. The passengers what then need to proceed down to level 2 to the TSA Security lines. The original option afforded arriving and departing passengers that are using the tracks to never change a level."

Is this true? Is baggage claim on the 2nd level?

I believe the departures are the first level, arrivals and baggage claims on level 2 and the bottom floor is for international customs.

Baggage Claim is on the second level. With the elevated, there is much less up and down changing of floors.

It seems all the dining options are all pretty busy but I would say High West in Conc. E (kinda out of the way) or Squatters in C

This is north end of the new terminal. The big glass wall will be at the right. At the foreground right is where the new east concourse will be built after the old concourse is demolished. In the second photo they are starting to work on the deck of the elevated roadway.

(edit) When I looked at the full-size (huge) photo, I noticed the big crane they've moved into position on the other side. Things are definitely going to start happening there.

The new director of airports has been selected. He was the former CEO of the Port of Portland which oversaw the Portland International Airport, the marine shipping terminal and other industrial properties. Seems like a good selection.
