I don't always order mini-burgers, but when I do, it is at Red Star.

http://thebutternuttree.ca tonight for a tasting menu.

Beautiful space, excellent service, gorgeous presentation.

Amuse bouche.
Crab tart - unique, but the crab needed something, overpowered by the rye tart
Bannock medley - quite tasty
Rockfish in broth - very nice
Bison duo - highlight of the night
Cheery ice cream - beautifully light with nice texture

Chef Ben Staley’s restaurant, Alta, which opened earlier this year at 10328 Jasper Ave., has closed.

Alta’s Instagram account says “ALTA is permanently closed in order to focus efforts into Alder Room. ALTA thanks its team and the many customers who broke bread at its tables.”

Indeed and unfortunate. I enjoyed my experiences there.

I did have a sneak peek of Revel last night, looks good.

When are we going to start getting some real restaurants downtown - not ones that close after a few months?

For me the fact there is no Keg right downtown speaks volumes and no Oliver does not count.

We still have work to do.

^ Not sure how you define "real restaurant" but there are plenty of them downtown. Just open your eyes.

ALTA was doomed to fail if you ask me. Hope he fares much better with Alder Room.

As for the KEG, I'm guessing they are waiting for a spot in ICE District. I know they were supposed to open in the Brewery District but they must have changed their minds. They really should take the Stage 104 space on 4th St.

That blows my mind! Hmmm....NOT on Bourbon Street? be busy for a few years, once all the locals try it once it's gone, might drag on a bit longer for the few tourists who haven't tried it and decided you can get the same thing at Long John Silvers for $4.99 (seafood combo basket)

There are something like 200 real food/restaurant places Downtown.

The Keg is an odd one as they certainly should be Downtown, but I don't think you will see them in the Ice District.

We have had tremendous growth in restaurants in the last few years in an industry that is incredibly difficult to master. Unfortunately not all will survive.

Baked ones look amazing - but then the fried ones do as well. Good batter and right oil temp = happy happy

A week of warm weather and yet quite a few places have already packed up their patios for the winter. Must have been that one day of snow last week.

Need some flagship restaurants downtown to bring people in and help out the Mom and Pop places. A standalone McDonalds and Keg comes to mind but there are others. You need a balance.

The same goes for retail although this is not the thread to talk about it but you need brand name outfits downtown to bring people in and help the little shops.

REVEL is doing their soft opening this weekend. Food is quite good. The tavern is going to be a good after work stop. The Chichen liver funnel cake is awesome.
