Looks like they're drilling core samples, doesn't it? This is likely associated with the R108 project on the most recent Emerging Projects Poster/List -- the "West Sixth Micro Project" located midblock on the north side of 6th between Nueces and Rio Grande, not including the parcels actually on Nueces (Star Bar) or Rio Grande (Rio/Lux).

We have no renderings of this project, I don't think. 172 units in a mid-rise building should be 10-15 stories on a lot that size.

The list has become pretty worthless and barely worth looking at. They've only done one all year, and that was back in February. They used to do them ~quarterly, and we actually learned about new projects from the lists. Whenever the city releases one now, we (SSP) already know more about about what's going on than whoever puts the list together.

Here's a list of the 50 tallest all residential towers in the U.S. Forty-one of the 50 are in NYC, Chicago and the Miami Metro. But Austin has #9 and #40. The Independent will be #8 in late 2018 depending on projects in other cities. But it's pretty impressive for a inland city the size of Austin to have two and soon three towers on this list.

I remember us talking about a plan to completely densify that tract, mostly by adding office space to the northern parking lot. That must be through the State, right? My google-fu is failing me -- I can't find anything out there in terms of renderings or updates or pretty much anything.

I've been posting my updated list of Austin's tallest projects roughly every month for a few years at UP, but I just haven't gotten around to posting it here or at SSC nearly so often. Anyway, here's my September update. There have been some updates in the past week that will be on the October update:

The biggest change this month is that I stopped tracking projects that were between 100' and 150' because 10-12 story buildings are just not significant anymore, and accurate info on smaller projects is sometimes difficult to obtain.

There are five status types:

U/C - Cement has been poured

Site Prep - Dirt is moving or utility work is underway

Site Demo - At least one structure on the site has been or is being demolished

Proposed - The project has been announced and/or had building permits filed

Planned - Less information is available than a proposed project, more visionary

Projects highlighted in green are underway with financing/funding in place. This can include projects with a status other than "U/C".

Projects highlighted in yellow have been completed during the current calendar year, and have been removed from the project count.

^55 projects, and that's without counting those individual buildings within some of those projects. That's about 25% of the total number of high rises that Austin has now.

My last lists that included 100' projects was consistently coming in around 80. The pipeline is huge. But it concerns me that it's been a year since the last 300' + project broke ground. It looks like the Marriott will break the drought though.

That Wiki listing seems to be pretty up-to-date. Except, it only pertains to the CBD and towers at or above 200'.
