A bit off topic since it's not a skyline, but to answer this and provide context - yes, it is built into the bank, even goes underneath Jasper Ave. The section on the right (aka: "Hall D") was added like 10-15 years ago?

In the last one you can see Jasper Ave cut up, and the heritage buildings there were later torn down and became Canada Place (the large pink building in the first photo)

Amazing density of downtown Montreal all those new developments keep pushing downtown in all directions, I mean Griffintown is essentially a part of downtown now. The 3rd picture shows how large downtown is as well. I'm really curious about the downtown population now that most of the buildings are complete, probably north of 120K?

If you take into consideration that the Ville-Marie borough's population in 2011 was 85,000, I'd probably say that DT is still way under 100,000 even if you include Griffintown.

Also, the definition of downtown isn't set in stone so it's kinda hard to get an accurate read. But let's say DT is Ville-Marie (85-90K) + Griffintown (5-6K), DT is creeping towards the 100K mark.

Thank you for that interesting explanation oiler-dude. That's a pretty unique approach to designing a conference centre.

Where in Toronto is this? Looks just like the Calgary Stampede right down to the chair ride.

Cool. Thanks for the info. Too bad about the heritage buildings, though it would have been hard to preserve them.

Amazing Montreal shots. Does anyone think Montreal will get a supertall in the foreseeable future?

It's the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). It's runs for about 3 weeks each year running up to Labour Day.

I go with the territory under the stratégie Centre-Ville since it makes sense to me

The documents released said population was 100,000 in 2011 within those boundaries. I have no idea what it is now, but I'm assuming downtown gains a good 3-4K people a year.

We won't honestly, and that's fine. I would like to see more towers in the 150-170M range though, especially in the western part of downtown. Now with the Children's hospital development (tallest tower is at 120M), I think it'll increase demand for taller towers in that area downtown.

No. There's a municipal rule that says you can't build taller than Mount Royal which stands at 235m

To add to that, zoning laws say that the highest height permitted in Downtown is 210m on certain lower lots. That's the maximum height we'll ever get (if we're lucky).

Forgot about that. Does anyone think that would ever change?

Which is silly, can you even see Mount Royal behind the skyline from the ground?

I think it's for people to keep seeing the river and the Monteregian Mountains in the background from the Mount Royal lookout but I could be wrong.

This height limit thing has been debated ever since skyscraper forums and the internet have been in existence.

But one argument often gets forgotten: even with our current height limit, not a single developer has sought to reach it since 1992, and the IBM and Le 1000 were hardly sound business propositions (high volume of empty floor space since 1992 in both towers).

The re-gauging of the height limit will happen one day, but not until a critical mass of saturation in the downtown built structure becomes fact.

As of now there is no need to build really high because there is no shortage of empty / parking lots to build on or old buildings to raze / re-develop.

ALSO: There is no culture of building taller for the sake of building taller here in Montreal.
