Thanks itom.
I imagined a bigger base for the Encore tower. It really surprises me that it is on such a small plot of land.

That's the least of our concerns on making downtown a more enjoyable and walkable place.

I gotta say I would prefer to see more shorter towers in oliver adding to the density rather than just a few much taller ones. especially if the tall ones are going to be in pairs and all in a row.

More Sao Paolo/ Tokyo, I guess, and less Dubai.

We're going to be pushing a years worth of condo inventory here soon. I suspect both of these are a ways out

Hyatt Place Hotel owner disappointed by pace of development in The Quarters

Doug Johnson

The Hyatt Place Hotel still regularly sees empty rooms, in part due to the sluggish development of eastern downtown, the hotel’s owner said.

Nearly a year after it opened its doors, the 255-room hotel currently sits at a 50 per cent occupancy rate, lower than a healthy 65 per cent. And the retail space on the ground of the hotel lies empty.

Owner Prem Singhmar — who owns other establishments in the greater Edmonton area — said the hotel at 9576 Jasper Ave. was planned during a boom cycle in Alberta as a part of The Quarters plan to fix up a neglected part of the city’s core.

However, the province’s economic slump has hindered the continuation of The Quarters plan and the eventual end of construction in the region.

“We are hoping that more development will come in the area, but nothing has started, so far at least,” he said.

Singhmar blames low oil prices and a general economic slump for the slow development surrounding the hotel.

it's still a tough spot. My folks asked about staying there for their trip up last weekend and I discouraged that, as they like to stroll around in the evenings and despite the nice hotel and proximity to the river valley it's just not a nice or safe area yet. The new liquor store across the street probably doesn't help

The area is much safer than people perceive it to be and a 1 block walk at the end of the day.

That said, we need to continue to work on the perception vs. reality piece here and continue to push for more active storefronts and new development.

95/Jasper will help a lot

Alldritt will help a lot

Artist Tower will help a lot

The new Nook Cafe on 97st/101A will be a community cornerstone IMO.

May not be as bad as most think but it's far from good. As my folks like to walk in the late evenings and are used to small town living I don't feel comfortable with them being in that area, and many chronic issues in that area remain. Further development in that area is a ways away. The hotel is in for a rough ride for the next while

It is an area that I will be focussing on in the near-term and part of the reason why we did the Quarters panel discussion a couple of months ago to then work towards a new work plan/committee driven by the business community.

That said, this area is a long-term plan.

Great to see and incredibly important to keep working on/towards. We will have some equally impressive stats coming out next week on this topic, stay tuned!

Edmonton becoming a safer city in the eyes of Canadians: poll

Clare Clancy

Edmonton is climbing the ranks of Canada’s safest cities, jumping ahead in a poll that measured the public’s perception of safety for the second year in a row.

“It has actually worked out very well for Edmonton,” said David Valentin, executive vice-president of Mainstreet Research, the firm that surveyed more than 2,000 Canadians across the country. “It has to do with the kind of media we’re exposed to in the rest of Canada.”

Respondents ranked 15 cities in terms of safety, regardless of crime statistics, for the 2017 Mainstreet-Postmedia poll released Wednesday.

In 2016, Edmonton took eleventh place, but the city has moved up to sixth spot this year. Calgary fell behind Edmonton, staying in tenth place.

Winnipeg ranked last once again — deemed the most unsafe place — while Ottawa clinched the top spot as the safest city for the second time.

National rankings for perception of safety in cities (from most safe to least safe):

Ottawa
Charlottetown
Victoria
Moncton
St. John’s, N.L.
Edmonton
Halifax
Vancouver
Regina
Calgary
Quebec City
Saskatoon
Montreal
Toronto
Winnipeg

I know some out-of-towners who are going to stay at the Hyatt for the Guns & Roses gig and plan to walk to the stadium (one of the hotel's selling points). I will report back their experiences.
