You would not be alone. I have always been intrigued by the seemingly widespread view that poverty is somehow "quaint" or "more authentic" than prosperity. Although I would question the idea that contemporary Montreal has "slums".

Of course. But it is precisely because the gritty, dense, old areas have character, whereas many soul-sucking (e.g., unidriveway) suburbs do not, and will never, have any character other than soul-sucking.

Those 70s/80s bland suburbs featured in Rush's "Subdivisions" are still soul-sucking, 30 years later.

So I visited Medicine Hat this weekend and was very impressed by the stock of historic buildings they had. Also their Arts Centre was very nice. One of those hidden gems I didn't expect.

The drive there though is mind numbingly boring. At one point I actually saw a mile long train from engine to caboose. Like the whole thing at once. It's that flat and desolate.

Also there was this freakish used car dealership with a street light sticking out the roof on the way into town:

Must have been a bad day because my cousin was also pepper sprayed by some native guy who tried to steal his car but only managed to get his phone and tablet. The cops caught him a few hours later at least.
