You know what the L needs? Banked turns. It would actually be able to travel at a normal speed for heavy rail transit.

also, would be nice if they painted the L. kind of odd to see rusty poorly maintained elevated railway next to gleaming new skyscrapers.

the lack of fresh paint made a pretty negative impression to me visiting Chicago.

^^ Beautiful, Solar. Looks just like the rendering.

The L has some banked turns in places. Off the top of my head; the Orange line south of Roosevelt.

In other news: The Trib is reporting the old CNA building, Big Red, is getting a new tenant. Northern Trust, which purchased naming rights. Expect some cool new signage to light up the night sky.

Weren't the developers of this one on the hook for nearby CTA improvements?

That is not how trains work - and they seem to hit about the right speed on this pair of turns (unlike Sheridan).

Actually, tracks are often super-elevated (banked). Look up "cant deficiency".

At this location, though, it would be pointless to superelevate the tracks - its right outside the Merchandise Mart station, so trains are already slowing down. It would also require some complicated engineering, since the CTA can't just pile up extra ballast under the outside rail.

I've thought that, too. A new paint job on the bridges might be nice, but I know that's pretty subjective and I think they actually chose that maroon color not so long ago?

I always thought it would be cool to have a kind of massive municipal push to brighten up the city so during those bleak, grey days of winter there is a pop of color throughout (at least) downtown.

I still don't know if I like 9 Walton or not. It's kind of blah right now, but maybe once it's completed it will all come together.

Speaking of No. 9 Walton - there was a New Construction permit issued yesterday for it. A revision as such:

"REVISIONS INCLUDE A REVISED RESIDENTIAL PENTHOUSE WITH PRIVATE ROOFTOP POOL, REVISED MECHANICAL PENTHOUSE AND REVISED ENVELOPE DESIGN ABOVE LEVEL 35. CHANGES RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL 7,092SF OF FAR AREA AND A REVISED OVERALL HEIGHT OF 491'-4\"."

I remember last year they sought a height to something like 456 feet, so this is much over that. I think the penthouse was already 7000 sq ft, so it looks like it's being doubled in size now. Wondering if it has a buyer (like Ken Griffin)? So basically, it sounds like a multiple level penthouse with potentially over 14,000 sq ft and a private rooftop pool. Dayum...

Dang, I didnt realize 625's glass was up that high. That al's beef corner is just asking for a highrise. And calm down beef sandwich fans, taylor street is a short drive away.

I knew it looked closer to 500' than 450' in recent photos.
It soars over Walton on the Park which is what 360 somethin? It damn near blocks Elysian from view. I'm pleasantly surprised at the impact this is having from many perspectives but especially from the west.

I think Walton on the Park is exactly 360 feet. This penthouse is going to be really big. I like that they were able to basically increase the height of No. 9 Walton something like 50 feet from the original plans Nice little surprise there of basically +5 or 6 floors of height.

That's exactly who it is. Apparently he's going to be joined by Kane and Toews, from what I've heard. Got a few friends working on that building.

Screw that! We shouldn't encourage driving. Al's Beef should be available to all people downtown by foot.
