London's skyline will look even better when the two 30+ floor towers are finished.

Here's yesterday's Vancouver's skyline from Reddit:

— I missed that... I'm not in the area at the moment. Would've been really easy to just watch from the shore:

Love the galleon from Pirates of the Caribbean:

It's a beautiful recreation of 400 year old Spanish galleon.

^ That's gotta be the most impressive shot of Halifax that I've seen so far! The city looks huge from that angle!

That shot would be from Georges Island - A small drumlin in the middle of Halifax Harbour, fortified by the British in the 19th century for harbour defence. It is managed by Parks Canada but is largely inaccessible (except for special occasions). The tall ships festival is on right now, and special tours of the old fort are now available.

Personally, I think the whole island should get the "Halifax Citadel treatment", be completely restored and opened to the public on a daily basis via water taxi. Located in the middle of the harbour as it is, it has stunning vistas on all sides. It's a huge wasted opportunity......

This Youtube drone video gives you a good idea of how Georges Island is situated in Halfax Harbour.

I agree it should be accessible and maintained like Citadel Hill. It's actually similar to Georges Island in Boston which is better maintained.

Here is a tour with great skyline views from yesterday by CTV in Halifax:

Fort Charlotte is the main fort on the island and it was established in 1750. A lot of the masonry fortifications there are from the 1700's. I'm not sure it was used much into the 1800's; York Redoubt became the most important fort by the mid-1800's as technology changed, and was used into WWII. Often the best-preserved forts are the ones that went obsolete, whereas the functional ones were retrofitted and a lot of their heritage value was destroyed.

One notable thing about the island is its role in the failed Duc d'Anville (his actual name: Jean-Baptiste Louis Frédéric de La Rochefoucauld de Roye) expedition of the 1740's. The ships gathered around the island and the duke was buried there. Another notable feature of the island is that it has a population of snakes that have been inbreeding for hundreds of years and now have a bunch of weird mutations.

I agree that it's an interesting site and it's too bad that it's so hard for people to visit. Many of the historic sites there don't live up to their full potential. They're left in poor shape and often aren't open to visitors.
