Interesting....James Sears or Dmitri or whoever this purv dude is runs an unregistered neo-Nazi party.

Going back to Quebec City fuglies...I saw this wonderful thing a few weeks ago:
https://www.google.ca/maps/@46.8118781,-...-af4w-y_hafsU0g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en

Holy Toledo.....this thing looks ALOT more fugly seeing it again in Google Maps. I really must question who thought placing randomly coloured brick walls on a façade was a good idea??

If you look at the middlish yellow brick wall...it kinda looks like a clock face....

More from the Markham Cow saga:

http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/toronto/cow-art-markham-1.4224030

Another asinine quote from that De Silva clown:

"The last thing that would cross my mind would be to raise a life-sized cow with chrome-like finish two storeys in the air and consider that proper,"

And this one:

"It's just very odd," he said. "We have a very austere look to the neighbourhood. A lack of embellishment is kind of the undertone of our design here."

Translation - we want plain, beige suburbia.

Still not as good as his quote in the other link:

“We’ve all seen ‘The Ten Commandments,’ and know what the raising of a calf is, and it’s just not a good thing, especially in Cathedraltown,”

I don't know where you're coming from, but that cow is absolutely about the stupidest-looking and most ineptly inappropriate piece of public art I've ever seen in my life, and if I lived there I'd be furious about it too.

I'm really unimpressed by the whole design of the park in itself.....seems pretty rum drum, though I don't get why the cow would need stilts. I understand the wreath, though the leafs standing on end are ridiculous.

I like the cow since it makes that beige, generic suburb have something to actually look at...though I sort of see what the residents might be mooring about. They didn't exactly have a town hall meeting about what kind of public art would go up....and that's likely a cause of a good amount of the feedback from those who live nearby. If there's no plaque next to the cow to acknowledge why it's there....then that's just fairly poorly planned.

Weird. I always thought she was from AB.

Edit: checked Wikipedia and it says she was raised in Fort Mac. I guess that is second home for many Newfies...

Nice Robert Z'Dar reference. This thread is now complete.

P.S. I think the avatar was Rico Rommheim's old one.

Of course it's ugly. Everything in that news piece is ugly. The nimbys are ugly. The suburb is ugly. The artwork is... ridiculous... but somehow less ugly. And from what I've read on here it makes sense that this is in Markham.

And the valuation of the artwork at 1.2 million$ is insane.

I see this eyesore of a modern office building everytime I pass on the A15 in Laval. Typical of a cheap design wanting to be colorful but ending up sucking my soul:

https://www.google.ca/maps/@45.5652427,-...cBnbGJ8Ex0dZ08H72xDMw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Plus you can see It photobombing in the background.

^I was thinking it reminded me of some of the modernist mid-rise areas in Sweden. They are functional but quite ugly.

It's a life sized cow sculpture on stilt in a very large open space representing the past use of this now subdivision . It's not something to get your panties in a twist over even if you think it is the stupidest thing you ever saw. I don't see anything inappropriate. $1.2 million isn't that much either.

Implying this could be perceived as a false idol. Now, that's fucking stupid.

I don't care for the cow either. I've said many times. PoMo is not my thing. It's definitely not the worst sculpture I've ever seen.

I LOLed at that one. Who is this guy? An alcoholic southern lawyer from the 50s in some courtroom drama?

I think the cow is amusing. I like this trend toward whimsy in public art (e.g. the dog fountain in Toronto's Berczy Park).

I just wish they would have spent more money on the base.

Cathedraltown is such a weird place - it's one of those subdivisions that hits all the proper new urbanist points on a checklist but seems quite sterile. Then you have the massive cathedral looming over it like something out of the Omen.

I suppose you have to give them a little credit for forcing a retail main street, but still: https://goo.gl/maps/ibq6VSAY1ux

Just look at that awesomely creepy thing (it's super cool up close). Before development it looked like some sort of post-apocalyptic dystopia:

That cathedral figured quite prominently in the horror movie In the Mouth of Madness.

I wish I had the technical skills to edit film. I'd superimpose Clockzilla in the place of Pennywise. Watch this trailer and imagine that for a second. It all makes sense. The evil entity of Derry is like the evil entity of Laval. Both exerting their malicious sway over the unwitting populace.
