YVR transborder still gets a huge boost in Q3 from Alaskan cruise business. While the cruise market has declined over the past 15 years, its still a sizeable chunk of business.

Absolutely. There is no denying that.

Melburnians, and most Melburnians will refer to their city simply as.. Melbs!

It's a beautiful city, you should all go there sometime.

Something I forgot to mention in my initial rant is that Melbourne is a no curfew airport - flights can takeoff and land 24/7 whereas Trudeau (like most Canadian airports) bans heavy planes between midnight and 7am (1am for landings).

They will dig the bagels, that's right up their (numerous) alley(s)!

Melbourne's alleys are fantastic, and for those who don't understand anything and who feel the need to label everything, the label 'European' is often applied.

They're not at all European though, they're just 'Melburnian'.

We could learn a lot, but they're not New York so.. no pressing need to mimic.

LH moved all their North American long haul ops out of DUS to MUC... that's why they operate MUC-YYZ today instead...

FRA-YYZ is still their primary flight of course..

Flying through CYVR the other day I saw BA's A380 at the gate and it got me thinking; if Air Canada were to place orders for A380s, which routes would they use them on?

Purely hypothetical, but I would speculate Montreal-Paris, Toronto-Heathrow, and Vancouver-Shanghai/Beijing as potential routes. Maybe even Toronto-Vancouver. Any other suggestions?

Well I know British Airways already does Vancouver Heathrow with an A380 so I could see Air Canada doing that route as well. Are the Emirates the only airline with a regular A380 route to Toronto?

Yes, it's just Emirates bringing the A380 into Toronto as of now. I had heard rumours that BA would use on the Heathrow route too, but that was just rumours, and as far as I know nothing solid planned.

Anecdote... I'm not sure if this is not clear in their boarding passes, but I suspect it is and they're just not reading them well enough.

So far this summer I have received phone calls from groups of relatives on three separate flights (most recent was this evening) from Toronto to Dublin. They had hours-long layovers in St. John's that they didn't know were happening so they could only phone - hey! Come pick us up for an hour! - last minute. It's the WestJet direct flight from St. John's to Dublin when it leaves here.

But in AC's config the A380 would have 600+ seats, which is just too much.

AC can already fill 450 in their 777s - I think that's good enough for them. If they want something larger they are more likely to get the 777-9X in a few years

Westjet does have a flight that runs from Toronto-Dublin via St. John's on a 737 - WS 16/17. But the scheduled layover on each leg is only ~2 hours at St. John's.

Westjet doesn't have non-stop transatlantic service outside of London-Gatwick from Toronto. All their flights to Dublin and Glasgow have to make a stop at St. John's or Halifax.

Now, maybe your relatives are taking the earlier flight to St. John's? It would seem odd though - usually the airline tries to minimize the layover time.
