I may just give this one a try. Never been to the one in the Exchange because I never seem to be on the street it's on.

Drives me insane that other than Freshii there's nothing remotely healthy to grab a quick bite in the Regent area, and now that's where I work. I'm so over Freshii and its taste-free meals.

I have love for the Oaxaca bowl. I'm not going to argue that it is a culinary masterpiece, but I find it satisfying.

...It's the only thing I've ever ordered from Freshii, and I've eaten there some 10-15 times though... Full disclosure and all.

Sort of interesting is Za is a local only company and one of the two setup from the start to basically be a franchise operation going forward. The other is Burrito Splendido. Was sort of funny going into Burrito Spledndido early on knowing it was a single location, local operation but it had all this franchise feel to it.

Also, the team behind The Roost are opening a prix-fix restaurant and lounge called Oxbow where Sawatdee Thai was.
Second Hermanos opens tomorrow if I read the sign correctly.

Za actually was created with the full intention of franchising right away, all over the country. I worked on the branding, day 1 it was planned.

Subway

IF SuBWAY Restaurant in Osborne Village (River) moved from its current location TO 257 Osborne St., then that could make way for the Gas Station Theatre expansion project.

Not sure if it was mentioned yet but Boon Burger on Bannatyne closed near end of June. Nice note on window thanking patrons indicating they are going to focus on their Sherbrook location.

Windows papered up like something going on inside - heard a rumour a Stella's going in there but nothing to support it other than a rumour lol.

Subway was drawn in on the Gas Station plans to have a main floor unit in almost the exact spot, so them being there is definitely not an issue. They just have no money.

That's unfortunate. I would be shocked if Stella's went in there as it's not very big, however they would obviously want a patio, and I would think they'd be smart and put it out back facing John Hirsch, where it's currently parking.

I SERIOUSLY hope the city spoke to the building/business owners facing John Hirsch to encourage them to make better use of the new woonorf, put patios in, hide dumpsters, etc. so it just doesn't become a fancy back lane again. That'd be such a waste. Also, hopefully they require frontage onto JHP when the empty lots along it eventually get developed.

The McPhillips Jollibee looks like it is a month or more out still. The exterior looks largely complete now but I could see a lift sitting inside and no real signs of work started on the interior construction. It is likely the lift is working on in-ceiling infrastructure like electrical and sprinkler systems.

I heard a rumor from a very reliable source that Rae and Jerry's is planning to close sometime in the Fall. I was told they are selling to a developer who wants to build condos on that site. Perhaps they were inspired by the Palomino redevelopment down the street?

This is unconfirmed, but I consider my source highly reliable.

Augh... of all the restaurants to lose... why that one?!

I have to admit I'm not the most regular patron, maybe twice over the last 15 years, but I like the place.

Wasn't Ray and Jerry's rumored to be closing a number years ago (I'm thinking around 2008 - 2010) and be replaced with either apartments or condo's?

If they do close who is going to supply the dainties to the funeral receptions in Winnipeg? It seems that most funeral homes use R&J for the reception supplier for the little sandwiches.

Seems to be a cafe going in at 333 Garry (Argyle Block, next to the Lindsay Building). The counter, tables, and lighting are done.

I think the stretch of Portage from Main to Polo Park will probably continue to evolve into a more urban form... it's probably one of the more ideal places to live for anyone without a car but who doesn't necessarily want to live downtown. Good, frequent transit access, shopping nearby... it makes sense. Just too bad it's taking out Rae and Jerry's.

I wouldn't be surprised if this news got out, that someone would come swoop in and save it. One of the most iconic restaurants in Canada. It's incredible going in there and the design is still impeccable 50s, yet it doesn't look dated at all. Restaurants are now going for that look again. Incredible.
