I can't get into specifics but I work in government services and deal with people applying for financial assistance. It is almost entirely white men who lie on paperwork about income and other information. They think they can qualify for benefits by not being truthful. The funny thing is that they are too stupid to realize that the form they signed gives consent for me to verify their information with the CRA and other provincial government departments and agencies.

And almost all of them drive pickup trucks and many of them are new and expensive ones. I can find out what vehicles they own. I have to be polite and professional with my clients and it's sometimes interesting to see how they try to change their stories or make excuses when I ask why the information from my checks doesn't match what they claimed on the application forms.


Getting back to the topic of this thread:

Who can find the ugliest pickup truck in Canada! I don't necessarily mean run down but also ugly in design, decor, driver, etc.

There are too many in my city to narrow it down to one. Duallies with lift kits and truck balls. $80K penis extensions are so common here as to become invisible.

Yes, I know that look of the shirt with the factory folds still prominent. Usually worn by people who don't wear dress shirts or suits very often unless they are the accused.

Agreed. I find pickup trucks to be fundamentally ugly and many of the people that buy them probably do not need them.

If you are a working man (construction, plumber, whatnot), wouldn't you typically want a van?
I didn't see any pickup trucks in Europe. Surely their economy is not so fundamentally different than ours?
Pickup trucks are part of the vernacular of North American culture. When undereducated macho meets (relatively) cheap gasoline, and aggressive marketing. Pickup trucks are the Budweiser of the vehicle world.

If you want a modern El Camino look to Australia. GM is just discontinuing their Australian model line and Ford did that too a while ago, but there will still plenty of modern, recent Utes on their roads for a long time.

Some do. For example, in trades like plumbing, you don't need a pickup so nearly everyone has a van.

Pickup advantages over vans:

1) 4x4

2) The ability to seat more than two.

3) Open bed is more convenient for dirty stuff, tall stuff, and anything that has to be dropped from above

4) Easier to work on. A van's engine is not easily accessible. I've owned some of each and worked on each, it's a huge difference even when we're talking about the exact same drivetrains.

The slow evolution of trucks from utilitarian to "personal vehicles" had started WAY before that. It's been going on since the early 1950s at least.

Dodge did start the "Big Rig" look trend with the '94 but that's totally unrelated to selling trucks as cars. If you want to find a watershed moment for trucks that were obviously designed to be also sold as cars, I'd say the new GMT400 trucks that GM introduced in the spring of 1987 are it.

I do have a truck (a Toyota Tacoma) I don't drive it much, but it is super handy for a lot of things. I have several rental properties and a cabin in BC, and the truck makes life so much easier when it comes to hauling stuff, or doing renovations, picking up a load of dirt, etc

However my truck is not modified in any way, it's filthy and scratched up, I can throw a load of broken cinderblocks in the back to take to the dump or use it to pull down a shed or take it down the narrow steep path through the trees down to the lake at my cottage while dragging tree branches down the sides... don't care. It'a truck.

My Toyota probably does more real work than 90% of the shiny jacked up rig rockets you see on the road

I didn't say that at all. However, I'll say that if people wanted to give more attention to defusing potential road rage incidents we'd probably see less of them. There are many ways to interact with an irrational angry nutcase when you happen to encounter one, and they all have very different outcomes.
