Olive Garden wouldn't have to go to Planning Commission. Restaurants on Vic East are a permitted use.

That being said, I've heard the rumor too

Depends where it is and if it has a licenced patio. Fudds needed approval, for example.

There was a public info session at O'Hanlone on July 21. In attendance & answering questions in a panel discussion and from the audience were Joe Belan (Canadian-born investment banker from Switzerland and prospective franchise owner), Paul Bernie (former exec. with Toronto FC of MLS and head of the proposed Canadian Premier League) and Lee Genier (former prez of Sask Rush lacrosse team and certain to be head of the Sask CanPL franchise). I wad there & Here's some of what they said:

- league hopes to kick off 1 week after the 2018 World Cup, so around
July 22/18 with six franchises
- first 6 teams will include Hamilton, Winnipeg (already announced) likely Halifax and hopefully 3 more. However, if not ready they will push back to 2019
- assuming CanPL kicks off with 6 teams in 2018, expect the Sask team to be # 7 or 8 and begin play in 2019
- no decision made between Regina or Saskatoon yet. Decision by end of this year. Plan to promote as a provincial team either way
- said they would privately fund & build a 8,500 seat, soccer-specific modular stadium in whichever city they ultimately chose. Cost would be $15-20M
- said they're not interested in using Mosaic stadium as it's far too big and wouldn't create a good atmosphere
- they would like to see Regina bid to host a World Cup game in 2026 (assuming joint Canada-USA-Mexico bid is chosen)
- ultimately, if the CanPL is successful, would love to see franchises in both Regina and Saskatoon. The inter-province derby would be a natural rivalry

Separately, I think/hope there's a good chance that On Ice Management (John Graham) will bring another international friendly like Valencia/NY Cosmos back to Regina next summer

Just the land "near downtown" could be 15 to 20 million dollars

Yeah, if they're looking to privately build a modular stadium for that price, they're basically asking to be gifted land by whichever city the try to get it out of..

They should probably just put it at Taylor Field, especially since the city has no intention of developing the housing there anyway.

That's perfect for Regina then. Maybe they can swing a deal with little Brad and the Sask Party for some really cheap land at the GTH (do you even realize how amazing their access to the new 2 billion dollar bypass would be), and the City can cover the entire cost of maintenance and operation of the new facility. Might as well just create a new "private sector sports venue download" on our property taxes so that we can clump this, the million plus REAL is requesting for Brandt Centre upgrades, and the hundreds of millions the riders will cost us for the next 30 years into one line item.

And in order for the new football club to show their appreciation to all the Saskatchewan politicians who love giving away public tax dollars to private sporting teams, they could honour them with an appropriate team name. How does the "Saskatchewan Cronies" sound? Has a nice ring to it!

Sarcasm aside, I'd actually like to see a professional FC here - but on their own merit and dollar. It's just getting exhausting with all the millions in taxpayer hand-outs to sports teams when we can't seem to even find a dollar for spending on things that actually improve the lives and safety of citizens like bike lanes or infrastructure improvements for our downtown.

Maybe it doesn't have to go GTH. Couldn't they just have a developer ask the mayor to build one? He can't say no to anyone in the construction industry. /sarcasm

That's hilarious that they blamed weather. Let's hope Regina doesn't get any more rain over the summer, praying for +40 drought conditions to gcomplete this tower. I hope no farmers read that.

Lots of activity today at the old Extra Foods at the Golden Mile. Demo has been going on for weeks now, but today it's very evident because they're taking down the Albert street facing portion.

I would speculate this option is on the table. The field is there already and the required space for modular stands, and it's a relatively short distance to downtown or Dewdney strip

They were supposed to use the Taylor Field area for housing, but that is likely so far down the road because the city is broke, the province has no money and the redevelopment is behind the railyard which is likely to be a slow process anyway. Is it preferable to use that area now for soccer or let is sit unused for 10-15 years?

There's effectively a zero percent chance private money builds a soccer stadium anyways.

Related: anyone else find it bizarre that they were auctioning off all of the trees on the Taylor Field site? Some were at/near $5 the day before the auction closed. The City has NO tree spades? (and if the answer if yes - I bet Wascana Centre would lend them one; or they could rent one). Unless the trees were at end of life (they didn't look amazing, but they also didn't look unhealthy), I just don't get why they would waste trees like that - especially for a token amount like $5.

Not my wheelhouse, so I'll assume there's a method to the madness.

They auctioned off the trees?! I didn't realize that was an option. My guess is that they are assuming they would get damaged when they raze all that concrete and it's easier to take the stadium down without trees in the way.

Pace of home construction in Sask. picks up in July

CTV Regina
Published Wednesday, August 9, 2017 11:45AM CST

The latest numbers show home construction picked up in Saskatchewan last month.

The seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts in the province increased to 4,617 units in July from 4,367 in the previous month, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. said Wednesday.

The annual pace of home starts in Regina rose to 2,179 units last month from 2,003 in June, while housing starts in Saskatoon increased to 2,167 units from 2,028 in the same period.

The pace of home construction in Canada ramped up for a seventh consecutive month in July, mainly due to increased building activity in B.C. and Alberta.
