On a different note, I wonder what will happen to the eastern CTC event routes post LRT. I assume the 403 will be truncated at Tunnies Pasture, but what about the 401? Might they re-route it to start at Pleasant Park or Billings Bridge instead of Blair?

The Landsdown event routes will be less affected, but the 451 might be truncated at Hurdman.
Very few people will use event buses if they have to transfer.

I'd be surprised if the event routes are changed much. The routes are already detoured off the Transitway today, so I suspect they will just continue like that.

As lrt's friend points out, the routes become much less attractive if there are forced transfers.

No penalties to LRT contractor for missing Canada Day target
Downtown streets were supposed to be clear before Canada Day, but the company won't face a penalty for that.

By: Ryan Tumilty, Metro
Published on Tue Jul 11 2017

The city’s LRT contractors will face no penalty for missing the deadline to clear up downtown for Canada Day.

When thousands of Canadians descended on Ottawa for Canada Day earlier this month, the hoarding constructions signs and road closures downtown were all supposed to be gone.

The aboveground work on the $2.1-billion Confederation Line LRT was supposed to be wrapped up in time for Canada Day. As originally planned, visitors would be walking along Queen and Rideau streets downtown unencumbered by all the work taking place underneath their feet.

While the contract with Rideau Transit Group (RTG) has many enforceable deadlines, Canada Day wasn’t one of them, according to the city.

“The project agreement did not provide for any penalties with regards to Canada Day 2017 readiness,” said Claudio Colaiacovo, acting director of O-Train Construction in a statement Monday.

The deal with RTG requires the company deliver the LRT project on a set schedule; failure to meet those deadlines, which include construction milestones, means the company will lose funding.

While that doesn’t come in direct penalties, the company isn’t paid if it misses a milestone. And since they’re financing the project, those costs will hit the company’s bottom line.

“The failure to meet these requirements will result in the corresponding payments from the city being delayed, which will in turn result in RTG incurring increased financing costs,” Colaiacovo said.

Construction on the tunnel through downtown for the new LRT was delayed when a giant sinkhole opened up on Rideau Street last year. The company did put up new hoardings around construction sites in advance of Canada Day and tried to minimize the disruption.

Despite repeated attempts Metro’s calls to RTG went unreturned.

Steve Cripps, the city's director of O-Train construction, said in an email Tuesday the work downtown would wrap up over the course of the next year.

“Various elements will be completed at different times. Some elements will be completed throughout and up to the end of 2017, and final touches, such as landscaping, will be completed by spring 2018.”

Good Day....

on a different note.... somewhere in the past while, there was a commentary on the berm .vs. the sound wall....
well...latest is : Quote :
Eastway Gardens shops for noise wall treatment options ahead of Belfast LRT facility expansion - Second wall option to muffle Via train sound faces opposition.
https://www.ottawacommunitynews.com/news...ahead-of-belfast-lrt-facility-expansion/
::::::
But from out of left field, they were surprised to learn the city is floating the option of building a second wall about 250 metres along their property lines to help muffle the sound of passing Via trains.

Via approached LRT officials to see if the city would be willing to construct a noise wall on the north side of the tracks, closer to homes “and essentially kill two birds with one stone because they get lots of complaints apparently about the Via trains going by,” said Chris Swail, who heads up the city’s Stage 2 LRT project. “The trains are by far the loudest things going by.
::::::
But some residents oppose the second wall.

My guess is many people who buy a house backing onto an active rail line are rail-fans and like watching the trains as they go by and don't mind (possibly even like) the noise.

If you don't like train noise then don't buy a house backing onto an active railway line, for f**ks sake. These people have no right to complain.

Taken this morning, and Kontinuum is supposed to premiere tomorrow Maybe someone is going to pull an all-nighter to make it more presentable?

Good Day...

I believe, IIRC, that the plan for Kontinuum is for the entrance to be off the Sparks staircase between the podium and the hotel, down to the old movie theatre for the commencement of the route/show, then down internally to the station, and then exit the exit doors in the last photo of the headhouse beside GluePot/Barbarella. IIRC.
The state of finish is (JUST) barely sufficient for that.

Five things to know about Kontinuum, Ottawa's new underground light show

Olivia Blackmore, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: July 15, 2017 | Last Updated: July 15, 2017 9:20 PM EDT

Starting Sunday, the Kontinuum underground multimedia show will welcome people to the new LRT Lyon station in dramatic fashion.

Created and produced by Ottawa 2017 and Montreal’s Moment Factory, it’s being pitched as the first-ever underground sound and light display held in a metro station still under construction.

“This was the most complex project of my career,” said Guy Laflamme, Ottawa 2017’s executive producer.

Kontinuum opened its doors to the media on Saturday for a sneak peek.

Here are five things you need to know about the event:
  • The production has a few Ottawa connections. The music that plays during the show, which shifts from zen-like lounge vibes to throbbing beats to swelling strings, was composed by Vincent Letellier and the lighting was designed by Ian MacDonald. Moments Factory co-founder Sakchin Bessette is a graduate of Lowertown’s De La Salle high school.
  • Laflamme wanted Kontinuum to be different from the sound and light shows you might see on Parliament Hill. His plan was to make the show an enjoyable and emotional experience that stimulates the senses, while highlighting Ottawa’s innovative, techy side and getting people excited about the LRT opening in 2018.
  • It’s free! All you need to do is go online to ottawa2017.ca and book the time you want to visit. But reserve quickly — Laflamme says 70,000 tickets have already been put aside.
  • The work of Moments Factory, a multimedia entertainment studio, came to the attention of organizers after they saw the company’s sound and light production showcasing the façade of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona in 2012.
  • Ever wondered what it’s like to be a hologram? At Kontinuum, upon entering the theatre, you can have your body scanned (not by X-rays, says Laflamme) to determine its frequencies and what colour that frequency is. A screen inside the theatre can then project a hologram of your scan, and you can download it right onto your phone with the Ottawa 2017 app. There’s also an option to purchase a pyramid that displays your hologram, which Laflamme compared to R2D2’s projection of Princess Leia in Star Wars.

Kontinuum runs daily, starting Sunday until Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Free tickets can be reserved online at www.ottawa2017.ca/events/signature-events/kontinuum. In addition, limited tickets will be available on site daily.

Kontinuum will begin at the old Place de Ville movie theatre on 300 Sparks St., lead visitors around to the station’s eastern entrance off Queen Street and down to the platform level. At the end, the audience will exit via an escalator that leads to the Lyon station entrance on the southwest corner of Queen and Lyon.

The entire experience involves walking about 500 metres and is expected to take people between 35 and 45 minutes to finish.

Around 70 people will be allowed to enter at a time, and organizers expect more than 4,000 people per day.

According to the Kontinuum website, the experience will be bilingual, and the Place de Ville theatre and Lyon station will be accessible to those with mobility issues. It stated that a service elevator would be reserved for those in wheelchairs or with limited mobility.

The website also cautioned that some of the effects could be upsetting to children under the age of five, and said the experience is “not recommended for guests who have medical sensitivity to strobe lights, fog effects, loud sound effects, or who have a fear of enclosed spaces.”

I was at the media preview. At first I wasn't very impressed but being down on the LRT platform and exiting the station was exciting. You get the feeling of what it would be like having a subway type of system in this city. The technology component is also impressive. I'm going back today with my son.

I went yesterday with my GF, 8 month baby and my dad, and we had a good time. Trick is to take your time and not rush through it. Get your body scanned with your ticket upon entering so that you can take a pic of your personalized image at the end of the tour. Also, when on the station platform, take your time, the full show takes about 10 minutes or so, meaning that if you arrive half way through a show, wait for it to finish, then watch the entire length of it for maximum effect. Lighting, visual effects and sound are really well mixed in together, trippy! Kinda wanna smoke one and go back to see it again with friends haha.

It was interesting to see how deep the tunnel is (it's a good 4 storeys down), but the light show is pretty mindlessly generic and thematically weak. I'm not sure what the message is supposed to be.

Just to redeem my experience downtown, I went into the new Bank Of Canada Museum after (which is also free). If you haven't seen it I highly recommend doing so for contrast. It leaves you feeling confident about the Canadian economy and your role in it. I wish Kontinuum was a bit more inspirational in getting people excited about the future of the city.

Don't expect much if you go, the place is still very much rough and unfinished. Also do not bring a bag or backpack, you'll have to check it in next door for 5 bucks.

My photos of the station in progress:

This is an interesting coincidence. My wife and I went to this show on Sunday at 12:30 and afterwards found our way to the Bank of Canada Museum. Weird.

Judging by those pictures, the whole place looks very structurally complete.. just needs finishings like tiles, drywall and paint.

I was a bit disappointed by the show as well, except for the part where you turn yourself into a "hologram" ... I also found several details of how the event would actually unfold to not be true:

X
~70 people enter at a time (more of an enter when you arrive situation)
X start off with a video in the old theatre (i was in a theatre?)
X 35-45 minutes (25)
X showcase ottawa's innovation and technology (with projectors and screens mostly presenting colourful lines, designed by Montreal's Moment Factory)
X and basically the entire premise as detailed on the website was indiscernible: The excavation of a 2.5 kilometre tunnel has revealed layers of the city’s foundation, exposing sediment dating 150 years back to Confederation. The exposure of these layers has released a flow of electromagnetic energy in the tunnel that was buried for centuries. Until now. It all began with a mysterious appearance at the Lyon station: a glimmering wall of light that can only be described as a glitch in the fabric of reality. The Loop is a fracture of time and space caused by an unprecedented release of electromagnetic energy. Since its appearance, construction workers have begun to witness inexplicable phenomena in and around the tunnel.

To be honest, I expected a lot more animation in the tunnel itself. I could have watched the same video at home on my computer with a blue light behind my head.

It WAS great to see the station progress though, and I commented to my friends that I didn't feel like the descent into the station took very long, so I think Ottawans will find it hard to complain about the drudgery of accessing the station. That's a win for the city and RGT.

Overall, if you're looking for something free to check out, I'd still recommended it, but prepared to smile, not to be wowed.

The Sun Life building is looking good inside, the LRT entrance is just missing the glass doors. Funny, though, the tunnel picture they're using is definitely not the Confederation line, it's a single track bored tunnel.

I agree with most of your points.

Their was definitely a theater though. At the beginning of the event, you're attention goes to the hologram scanners. If you looked around, you would have seen the movie screen on the east wall (between the door where we come in and the door when we go back out towards the station). If you looked to the west side of the room, you would have seen 2 more doors (well curtains) to what was once the lobby, and the multi-leveled seating area. Same basic layout as any other theater.

The station was pretty awesome. 4 levels; street level, station entrance concourse x 2 (Place de Ville Concourse is fairly large, Claridge Concourse is basically just a landing), the vaulted concourse that stretches above the entire track and the platform level. The vaulted concourse looked much more spacious than the rendering. Platform level seemed a little higher and wider than depicted.

From everything I've read, it seems the east entrance concourse will be connected to the underground Place de Ville mall, but I couldn't see any doors. West entrance had no knock-out panels for the future Claridge development.
