I'd have to say your description generally rings true, but as someone who has been a North Vancouverite for most of his life, I'd add that the people of the North Shore seem to have an inflated impression of themselves. The physical geography of the area is certainly better than its inhabitants.

Or they'll say how stupid you guys were in 20 years.

Quote:
In time, the $30-million difference will seem small, according to Bell.

“I think that in the future, residents would comment on how reasonable the cost was in 2018, by comparison to what it will be 20 years in the future.”

Council should support the “Cadillac version,” agreed Clark.

While Clark often positions himself as a defender of the taxpayer’s purse, he advocated spending the extra $30 million.

“It sounds like a lot of money, it is a lot of money. However, this is amortized over 60, 70 years, perhaps.”

With the city being “bombarded with density,” it makes sense to build a centre for the “residents of tomorrow,” according to Clark.

Bookham agreed, making a case to find a home for the city’s itinerant curlers, many of whom packed council chambers during the meeting.

“This is not the time to be timid,” she said, calling for council to generate as much money as possible from neighbouring redevelopment.

“This is not where we should be looking for affordable housing.”

That's weird, why did the anti-density and pro-density councillors flip from their usual positions? Don Bell, Rod Clark, and Pam Bookham are usually anti-everything.

Seeing Delbrook makes me want a new Harry Jerome even more.

I thought it was because they think they can get votes from the various sports groups. I think they'll have to make the towers 40 storeys to fund it all.

After reading the entire article again it sounds like the Keating group were worried the usual anti-density suspects would try to get the rec centre without the towers, so they're forcing them to approve towers first.

Does anyone know what's going on with Concert's Harbourside development (south of the auto mall)? It's been over three years since it was approved and no changes to the site whatsoever besides some billboards. Seems like easy money?

Eventually the development will hold roughly 800 strata and rental units and 300,000 square feet of commercial space. It received its official community plan amendment in 2012 and its rezoning in 2014. Today, the company is focusing on finalizing designs for the first phase of the commercial and condo project. Those should be coming to the city sometime in 2017, Watters said.
Back in December.

Yes, very nice and bright. I do wonder if they'll regret not making the pool larger, though. IIRC the old William Griffin pool had a larger main tank.

Montroyal Bridge replacement under way

Construction is progressing for the replacement of the Montroyal Road bridge. The old bridge was fast-tracked for replacement last year; the new structure will have two lanes (as with the old one) along with sidewalks on both sides and bike lanes.

New retaining wall on the northern side of Montroyal (west of the bridge):

Western end of the temporary bridge:

Existing bridge and the temporary bypass:

Eastern end of the temporary bridge:

Nice to see someone else contributing photos (edit: fixed) but don't forget to resize, even on a 4k monitor those are twice as long as my screen. 1600 pixels wide is generally the most people will tolerate and you can do it right on imgur.com from the top right menu.

As for the bridge, it seemed old and rickety when I went to Handsworth Secondary in the early 90s. Glad to see it replaced, and one of the few places where no extra lanes is ok.

How come the George Massey Tunnel hippies and environmentalists and general whack jobs aren't getting up in arms about this bridge replacement? Where's all the outrage about where all the extra traffic going to when it hits the next traffic light or cost overruns or is this about salmon trying to swim upriver to their spawning grounds? Conspiracy?

Jk. At least something is getting rebuilt in the lower mainland like it should when it reaches the end of its service life or is generally inadequate .

Thanks, I hope they're better now - I noticed the size and then went to learn how to resize Imgur.

Yes, they did some sort of assessment in recent years and the bridge suddenly became high priority...

OK, "potential neigbour," then don't live there. Or don't worry about it because there's at least one floor of offices and stores between you and the bowling alley.

You'd think people thinking about living at the busiest corner of Central Lonsdale, next to a fire station, police station and large hospital, wouldn't be so noise sensitive.

They make a bowling alley sound like a theme park. Talk about silly, since when has a bowling alley ever caused a disturbance.
