Oh they complain - it's just that they're pointed at the (decidedly not new) OCP. There was a woman who lived on the other side of Kingsway who complained about the height of the Station Square towers. She made it into the local papers but beyond that I don't think she achieved anything.

They might allow tall buildings *near* to the single family zone, but they are decidedly against allowing anything other than single family *in* the single family zones, regardless of transit proximity. They then claim that the tenants thrown out of Metrotown are the victims of inevitable market forces over which they have no control.

That's a separate issue - the lack of rental buildings being constructed. Vin was talking about people complaining about tall buildings being built in their neighbourhoods.

Really like the low-rises + retail popping up in the Royal Oak area

Pretty sure they do, they're just ignored. That's a good thing within reason.

edit: oops, didn't see the new page.

The OCP doesn't stop north shore/CoV NIMBYs from getting council to back down. See Chinatown or Promenade on Esplanade ave being 12 storeys instead of 35+.

Sussex has been featured here already since last summer. Very little has just happened since then, which is a bit odd.

The new 36-storey tower at Nelson/Imperial will be called Polaris at Metrotown. No renderings yet.

Burnaby is updating its transportation plan to supersede the previous 1995 plan.

Among the proposed goals:
  • provide people with multi-modal access
  • provide access and choice for people of all ages, abilities, socio-economic
    levels, and backgrounds
  • reduce deaths, injuries, and conflicts for all modes
  • increase the mode-split of active transportation modes (walking, cycling, and transit)
  • increase the use of more sustainable transportation modes including walking, cycling, transit, car-share, low- or zero-emission vehicles
  • reduce the distances driven by providing local options
  • increase the efficiency of finite road space
  • increase the integration of land use and transportation planning
  • increase north-south connectivity

Then I have to give credit to the City of Burnaby for disregarding people who have nothing to contribute but forever against development.

Agreed. I am in favour of densification as it is better for the environment because it makes it easier for retail to get a foothold in an area. Indeed, large scale grocers like Save On and Whole Foods will find an area with this type of development more appealing. This is why I choose Brentwood to live as a I can walk from my future home to a grocer or to grab a cup of coffee in a few minutes. It is exciting seeing what is happening in all the four quadrants.

However, the way Vancouver is developing outside the Downtown core there is virtually no multiplier effect in the city. The type of developments being proposed-low rise, townhouses, and laneway houses- do not allow for this. It seems the city is stuck in small town mindset. You cant leave density on the table because of NIMBYism (Hello Grandview-Woodlands) or trying to keep the city quaint. A few hundred units here, a couple of hundred there add up to thousands of potential homes never being able to be sold. In a region like ours you have to maximize housing opportunities.

The crows must love that place. I've seen them roosting on the fence boards at the top there in the evenings. I was surprised that they would leave their usual haunts (e.g. Still Creek Dr.) for somewhere so temporary.

I've lived in Burnaby my whole life and everyday crows fly from Surrey (I suppose) Northwest to the Brentwood area. It's really weird. I can recall watching crows fly northwestward above me sitting in Deer Lake. They just fly in a straight line (maybe 7 wide) for a while. Probably a gang/army as crows do that.

A lot of the crows spend the night in the trees at the grand casino. Its quite a freaky site.

I live in North Van and every evening thousands of crows fly by my place near the water on their way back to the BCIT area. Pretty cool to watch. Sometimes feels like an Alfred Hitchcock movie.

They also fly back from Stanley Park to Burnaby at dusk.
Don't park on the top level of the Villa Grand Casino garage at night - you'll have crows hopping on the roof of your car.

The apartment building that was under contract on the east side of Telford and Beresford has been sold. There was a sticker placed there a few days ago.

Huh. That's interesting. I remember they used to hang out in the woods where Costco now is.
