It's more informative seeing how much of the international traffic is US traffic but agree with you that not including US traffic in the international figure is a bizarre Canadianism.

It's mostly done, I think, because of preclearance. Otherwise, I doubt it would be done.

TAP recently operated their Retrojet A330-300 into YYZ a couple of times, and on one occasion at least, operated a fully retro-uniformed and retro-catered inflight service.

Well it's very much out of the way. I think if AT is planning on funneling Western Canada - Europe PAX through YYZ/YUL they are just handing that business to Route and Westjet... which maybe they are.

How is that less acceptable than funneling Eastern Canada - Asia PAX through YVR?

YYZ and YUL are at the bottom of the list, YUL borderline unusable.

Meanwhile the speeds in Toronto, Atlanta and Montréal were slower than any Wi-Fi we saw in Africa

Who does that?

Outside of Australia AC generally routes its Eastern Canadian PAX through YYZ.

Air Canada serves 6 mainline Asian destinations from its YVR hub and 6 mainline Asian destinations from it's YYZ hub.

Out of Montreal, based on my (anecdotal) experience, I'd say it was (before Mtl got direct China flights) 50% through YVR, 50% through YYZ.

Interesting, because from my experience I've not had an issue at YYZ with their Wi-Fi, but couldn't get anything to load at YVR when I was there a few weeks ago. In the end I gave up trying and just used my own data. YYC though was fast.
I'm flying through YVR again in a few weeks, I'll have to check what it's like then.

Canada's top 5 for 2016 is around 105 million+.

Yes Australia is isolated where we have other options. Canada-US for example:

There are 300,000 people crossing the Canada-US border each day…so about 110 million per year. About 16 million fly…..leaving 94 million….and probably most are driving (or on the bus or train) That is a lot of potential airline passengers!

The difference between the top 3 is staggering ! China should eventually catch up to the US, further distancing the 2 superpowers from the rest of the pack.

However, the US growth rate from 2015 to 2016 surpassed that of China. I think China needs to restructure their entire airspace system to cope with the increase in demand. A lot of restrictions at the moment, hindering growth.

Russia is also interesting. For such a big country of 144 million people, it should theoretically be at a higher position. However, most of the population is concentrated to the west, and disposable income isn't as high as the European countries, explaining the weaker air travel numbers.

The reasons mentioned above sum up why. I'm actually impressed with Canada's ranking. For a country of only 35 million people, being in the top 15 is great ! Australia and Spain aside, all the other countries have a population of over 60 million. 7 countries have a population of over 120 million.

With the massive growth our big airports have seen in 2016, 2017, especially YYZ and YVR, I wonder if the gap is narrowing with Australia.

Sydney used to be busier than YYZ a few years ago but YYZ really exploded and is quite ahead now

The gap will narrow somewhat, but I dont think it will be enough to overtake Australia. YYZ having a slight edge on SYD is not what will make Canada overtake Australia. The secondary Australian airports are much busier than their Canadian counterparts. (MEL by 11 million over YVR and BNE by close to 6 million over YUL)
