Election season is coming again in Ontario and surprise surprise after promising HSR it is now essentially being promised again.

We need both projects, and a sensible government would get both done without pitting them against each other.

As far as I know they didn't have their environmental certification until quite recently, though I may be incorrect there.

I'm not sure what he said that is false. Mexico is a third world country and you can't safely drink tap water here.

How much of a premium does a temporary decking system during station construction cost?

Weekend street closures at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue for the construction of the Purple Line Extension subway has been completed five weekends earlier than originally scheduled — even after interruptions due to heavy rains impacted work earlier this spring.

The decking operation included excavating a portion of the roadway and replacing it with concrete deck panels that will act as a temporary street surface while underground station excavation continues below. There are 575 concrete panels measure 9 feet by 14 feet that have been installed for the Wilshire/Fairfax decking. ...

Sorta reminds me of one of those pictures from construction of the NY subways where they've riggd up a temporary streetcar track over the excavation

Open tomorrow as well (28th)? Might drop by then. I'm flying out to Los Angeles tomorrow evening for a convention, but since the location of this is Cambie & Broadway I'll be all set! I'll see if I have time to check out the construction on Wilshire, but I probably won't.

not really, i went to the first one in the Crossroads building. all the same information that has been posted here.

nothing new, although they were mentioning a lot about what station designs should be. such as accessibility, escalators, entrances, design, etc. but they did confirm both up and down escalators. like Evergreen-Line was, not Canada-Line, so that's good.

they should just do away with stairs; have 3-4 escalators and adjust based on peak demand.

Interestingly, the biggest point of contention was people being upset that it wasn't going all the way to UBC. Pretty sure it's just general ignorance, but I can't help but wonder if some of them voted "No" on the referendum...

Supporting transit and yet voting "No," by definition, implies that you understand fully that a "No" vote means not enough money to get the subway to UBC. That's perfectly fine - plenty of reasons why the referendum sucked.

But if so, you understood the consequences of that vote, and shouldn't be confused or upset when that's exactly what happens. That's the intellectual equivalent of noticing the "Wet Paint" sign, sitting down anyway, and then yelling about your ruined clothes.

Adding to that, a yes vote would not give Skytrain to UBC.

The referendum was a setup, thanks to dear Christy.

It was designed to fail, even if it got a yes vote. She loved the "big bridge" approach because that was for her supposed constituents. There was no referendum on the new Deas Island bridge. No need, that is for her friends.

And flooding Vancouver with a million new cars the streets cannot handle is her petty revenge for Vancouver not voting for her.

As I have said earlier, politics and transportation are indivisible.

BTW off topic on the UBC line, when the NDP kills Deas Island, they should replace it with a RR line from south of the south arm of the Fraser to the north shore, with a huge parking lot at the south end.

The landfill site just off the interchange is the perfect spot for a southern terminus and a 10,000 car parking structure.

My photos from the June 28th Open House. I found the post-it notes the most entertaining, though you may have to click on the photos in order to be able to read them.














- I debated about posting this one as the post-its were all from from one individual who had a clear agenda





So, overall, I felt that the open house was about creating community engagement and informing those that are new to the region / have been living under a rock about the project. I didn't really learn anything new, but for this stage in the process that's probably expected.

I find this kind of thing to be mostly self serving BS about engaging people when they should have enough common sense to build a station that doesn't "🞵🞵🞵🞵". I didn't read the post-it notes so maybe there are some great ideas.
