It's looking very good. It looks like all those solid, dignified buildings around the country that were built during FDR's administration.

The crown really makes this look timeless, like a great temple in the sky. The rhythm of the setbacks add to the drama of the crown as well.

I love the setbacks. Such a classic feel. When this thing is completed, and If you didn't know better, you would almost think it was a freshly cleaned high-rise built in the thirties. Especially if your viewing it from a short distance.

If only the civic center redevelopment in LA had buildings like these surrounding City Hall, maybe in white precast or green terracotta.

Yeah, I've been thinking that Downtown Los Angeles could use a few classic styles added to it's portfolio. That is, as far as the high rises go. I like L.A.'s skyline look, and the contemporary high-rises are for the most part quite attractive. Also, I'm very encouraged to see how many of the mid-rise gems, with the incredibly ornate and beautiful facades are being restored. There's a boatload of development going on downtown now, but other than City Hall there's really not a classic era high-rise that is noteworthy. Given the importance that Art Deco has played in L.A.'s history, I would really like to see some strong Deco Classics along the line of the Chrysler Tower. Also, something along the line of this Alexander Tower would be a good beginning.

Just as a little disclaimer. I guess you could in many mid-size cities consider buildings along the height of The Biltmore as high-rise. I'm just thinking that by L.A. standards that height would be more along the line of a tall mid-rise.

I have often been one who has thought that this project is taking a long, long time; plus it seems to have periods of very noticeable activity followed by equal amounts of time where little happens on the outside.

So I went back and compared this to 1213 Walnut St. which is just about ready to open its doors to renters. 1213 is about 80' shorter, and the building site is much tighter, where this building for the first few floors spreads out abit. This building has 6 more floors of apartments.

This building reached ground level around mid January 2016 where 1213 Walnut reached ground level mid April 2016.

So, what all this is telling me, at least when compared to 1213 Walnut St., this is definitely taking longer, but considering that it is a larger and more complex design, the time difference is not nearly as great as I would have thought. This is based on a guess that this build will be ready for tenants next spring.

Is this building due to get new cladding? One Franklin has turned out well.
