[Surrey] SFU Surrey Expansion

Just walked past this building site the other day and realized that SFU and Prime are almost seamless attached for the first four floors or so, with maybe a 3 inch space separating the two structures. Wasn't aware of this.

I walked by this for the first time in a few months, and I was shocked by the scale of it. The pictures just don't do it justice, especially the huge atrium in the middle.

Yeah I walked by tonight and took the photos below. The building and atrium are really starting to have a dominating presence over University Dr.

The atrium is looking great. The 2 buildings are right up against each other on the first few levels, but now that they are on to level 4, you can see where the building will start to be set back away from Prime for levels 4 and 5.

These buildings are really filling in the area. Can't wait to see some of these projects finish up!

Will be nice once the rec centre goes and the other side of the street redevelops as well.

Also they need to do something with that median on University Drive. Surrey is usually pretty good with high quality landscaping in medians, but that one is looking pretty barren.

I'm guessing the Rec Center won't go until the new one is built by Scott Rd Station? If so, that's a long ways out

2 years? I think that's when the new one is scheduled to be complete / current one demolished.

Sounds about right

The corporate report says the project is expected to be completed in Summer 2019.

Yeah these two projects are really making this area come together and feel like a downtown centre. Hopefully this will spawn even more developments . If there is one thing that our downtown needs, that seems to lack in the other suburban metros, is that we need some space for small businesses. Small businesses can add some serious soul to the core.

When they figure out what's going on with the Surrey LRT (Boo!), the city needs to do a serious Cher-style face lift on Surrey Central station.

They're already starting the red-do of the station. Hopefully next up are King George and Gateway. Either a facelift or deep clean/repaint. They're really quite disgusting and grimy like Surrey Central.

Well the damn thing is rusty and grimey. And I wouldn't have a problem with the design of the Surrey stations if they were properly maintained. However when it gets to the point of being disgusting and whatnot, its time to do something about it. Aesthetically speaking the currently scheduled upgrades will just be placing a Band-Aid on the situation, and that's okay, however I imagine that they styles are going to clash with each other.

It will be interesting to see how the currently scheduled upgrades play out in terms of functionality seeing as how they are adding an elevator and escalators (which are desperately needed). When the currently scheduled upgrades get done, they should consider getting the rest of the station to match.

And that's enough off-topic discussion on this thread for now .

That and it will be replaced by a YMCA. I believe the City is working through that process right now. So likely you'll see the arenas built near Scott Road and a new YMCA built where the bus loop is then the current Rec Center will come down for re-development. So 5+ years.
