The west end of DT is really unfortunate. I like the massing but the individual buildings are mostly awful. Lacaille Group dominates and it shows.

Yes sir, 3rd or 4th in North America too I believe, just behind Newark/New Jersey.

Living room in my new place looks straight now Burrard, when a big ship passes through the harbour it really dominates the view.

Where else? Probably from the Neptune Bulk terminal if not from the downtown East Side terminals. It's leaving a closed off harbour towards open waters in that picture fully loaded.

According to wiki it's 6th: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_busiest_container_ports
According to this magazine it's 5th: https://thebossmagazine.com/busiest-north-american-ports-cargo/

Although you could probably count it as either 5th or 4th respectively since LA and Long Beach are literally right beside each other. In terms of rankings LA/LB really dominate, followed by NYC / Newark with a decent drop to the one's around Van's size. Still pretty impressive though, especially if you look in the growth since 2005!

Weird,
I always thought it went Galveston, NewYorkNewJersey, then Vancouver, with LA/Longbeach in there if you combine them.

Aha, here's what I was thinking about:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ports_in_the_United_States

Sorting by containers only includes one type shipping. When measuring by tonnage (ie bulk+autos+containers) Vancouver at 140 million tons is 3rd or tied for 3rd depending on if you combine all the LA ports into one... which kinda makes sense IMO.

Looking at that list the amount of shipping going out the Gulf of Mexico is just huge!

That makes sense! And wow - the Gulf Coast really dominates. I assumed petroleum products but looks like the Port of Louisiana transports an absolutely massive amount of grain too. I can see how bulk shipping would definitely push Van's numbers up in the rankings.

I wonder what cargo is being shipped out? Like, lumber, goods, cars?

It's containerized so probably consumer/manufactured goods.

Cars go out of the Fraser port and have totally different carriers, there was one anchored in the port the other day. They're pretty cool looking:

Ya definitely thought the same that the gulf coast was mainly oil but I guess it makes it does a lot of sense there's a lot of grain etc... given its location at the head of the Mississippi.

If it's headed back overseas there's a decent chance a lot of the containers are empty too. Apparently there's a big imbalance between containerized imports from and exports to China leading to the "increasing use of containers in sectors not historically regarded as suitable for containerisation, such as forest products, iron and steel scrap and waste papers" in an effort to fill them. Possibly e-waste too.

Yes, I have been reading about shipping and the Port of Vancouver this Friday afternoon...

Ya I'll admit I ended up down a bit of a rabbit hole this morning as well.

Turns out global shipping is pretty cool.

Came across this site that tracks all maritime traffic, showing where boats came from, where they're off to next, what they're carrying etc... Fascinating stuff!

There seems to be a lot of white containers on that ship and I was under the impression reefer units are usually white. Have you seen anything about reefer containers being white?

I think they are almost always white for reflective purposes - that seems like a lot for a ship that big though! It could be the standard light grey Maersk containers that just seem white because of the exposure in the picture: https://static.vesselfinder.net/images/media/b6ca9e8af125f45b38ca6247f7dab461.jpg
