I see what you mean. That is another superior design. He did seem to save his best designs for other cities. For whatever reason, great architecture has always alluded San Francisco. Architects just don’t give that city their best work, but that's also the reason why SF won’t likely regret what they’re getting. In and of itself, it’s one of the better additions to a city with an already conservative architectural aesthetic, even if the Pelli firm designed it on a lunch break.

I remember in the beginning stages of wilshire grand's planning the developers made a big deal about retail, even "luxury" retail (whatever that meant to them) being on the first 2 floors. Is that now over and it's just restaurants?

What do you guys think about those Times Mirror Square renderings?

I think that's a game changer for that area.

I think it looks awesome. That area is starting to become very modern and trendy.

I think that's a game changer for that area.

The game changer is really all about that paseo that’s created between the Times building and the new development. This is what should have been for the Grand Ave project by Gehry. In terms of architecture, I’m looking forward to the other development behind this at 222. W. 2nd Street, although who knows if that’s still in the works now that Tribune Media is owned by someone else.

A few possible explanations I've seen floated.

1. The Times is lying to save face.
2. The rank-and-file staff is being kept in the dark.
3. The relocation rumors were floated to give them stronger bargaining posture with Onni to re-up at Times Mirror Square.

Personally, I hope it's #3. The Times belongs at Times Mirror Square for both sentimental and practical reasons.

That being said, the Times to Aon Center has been discussed pretty openly in CRE circles for over a month now (which is why the Real Deal also picked up the story).

When I first mentioned it a month ago my source was connected to ownership out of Chicago. This guy doesn't mince words. Unless something has changed since, the move is a done deal.
