Can't wait to see NMS in person next week. Too bad the passion and love for the CFL doesn't extend beyond the Sask border. And before I get flamed, I mean insane, obsessive passion and love for the CFL. No other place in Canada comes close - they are probably losing their minds that the Riders are 0-2. I truly hope the CFL is around for a long time, so Rider fans can enjoy their stadium and of course pay for it!

A few years back the company I work for bought out another company in Saskatoon. While there helping with the "merger", we noticed quite a lot of Roughriders apparel and souvenirs, etc. There was a game on Friday night and the office closed at noon for the regular season game. About half the employees would drive to Regina for the game - the other half would be glued to their TVs. We asked a lot of the employees why the Roughriders are so popular, and their answer was almost always "There's nothing else to do in Saskatchewan".

^^ what a coincidence! I was in Hamilton briefly beginning of April of this year visiting friends, & while waiting for the airport security line to open up that afternoon for the 5 flights flying that day, Someone asked where I was from, I said Saskatchewan & they immediately said 'Go Riders!' it's the one game of the year Hamilton Ticat fans really look forward & its a real treat for Hamilton because of how much fun Rider fans are and since there's really nothing else to do in Hamilton apparently either..
The airport in Hamilton seems to really be big on CFL swag as well from what I saw in the waiting area/gift shop/vending machine area.

This makes me roll my eyes so hard.

My God, the people living in Quebec City, Norther Ontario, the Territories, and Atlantic Canada collectively must be seconds away from dying of boredom since they don't even have a CFL team to provide them with something to do for 3 hours, 20+ times a year. It must make the remaining 8,700 hours especially depressing.

Why would you turn a feel good story into a shot at Saskatchewan and the CFL? Its so frustrating at times that some Canadians are such jerks towards a domestic league.
I was at Hamilton last year for a game. The walk towards the stadium was unreal with all the people and activities. I loved it and now living in Ottawa I'm looking forward to experiencing a RedBlacks gameday and having a great day!

And as to Berklon's comments, they are, to be perfectly frank, too stupid for words. Unless you believe that the NFL's popularity in the US is because there's nothing else to do down there.

I think that's just the stock self-deprecating answer that they give the easterners because they think it's what the easterners are fishing for. Not so much a real analysis of the situation.

Really not sure why people are criticising my comments when I was simply repeating what many in our Saskatoon office has said. If you have a problem - take it up with those Saskatooners (Saskatoonans?). I guess their comments are too stupid for words? It's not to be taken literally like there's absolutely nothing to do... it's that the options are much more limited than some other parts of the country.

There is a truth to this as there are many more rural parts of countries which are hardcore supporters of their sports teams. Green Bay is VERY hardcore about their Packers - and one major factor is that Wisconsin isn't the most lively place in the US. The same holds true for their University of Wisconsin, Kansas State University and Oklahoma State University NCAA football teams.

Competition for the entertainment dollar is hardly a new concept. It gets discussed on this forum often. More competition and entertainment options means harder times getting team support. Less competition and entertainment options means easier to get team support.

The hostile attitude of some Canadians vis-à-vis the CFL goes beyond the number of entertainment options where they live, or even simply not being interested. (Which is kind of my attitude towards basketball, lacrosse, and some other sports. I am not hostile to them and not even that closed-minded about them. But I don't seek them out.)

But in some circles in Canada you have this "ewww... the CFL" mindset that speaks to something different. Almost psychological.

Kind of like a teenaged girl who doesn't want to be seen walking next to her mom at the mall.

Riders are just part of he culture in Sask. Even during the dark ages when folks wouldn't show up there was still a large group of die hards who would trek out to games. The team also would spread mass propaganda province wide and do events and sponsor stuff. I learned Rider fandom was no joke when I'm the middle of a town just shy of Uranium City folks there were OBSSESED with the Riders. I was almost a god telling them I have met some of the roster players at that time. They were crazy about the team and this place was literally the middle of nowhere. This stuff does not come over night though. The Riders organization has bought lots of goodwill by investing time and energy all over the province. They have built up and maintained a fan base and are reaping the rewards now.

It's interesting how Olympic Stadium effectively functions as the Als' home except for the actual games.
